1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Noticed the other day that league of legends was near on maxing out a single thread leaving the other 11 idle. Have decided to just go ahead with a new 6600k setup as I got a good deal. Since getting the Xeon I've only used the extra cores for benching so the improved IPC should help in games.

Going to run some benchies at the weekend. :) As 3.6ghz was the max I could get I'm hoping for some reasonable gains in performance and features such as sata3 and m.2.

Quick stupid question.

I've got a Dell T5500 with 2x 2.66Ghz X5650 Xeon Processors.

I'm considering putting x-plane on there for a bit of fun, and noticed it can utilise dual processors (recommended in fact) but it does say core speed above 3ghz too.

If I could get a matched pair of 3.46Ghz X5690 Processors, am I likely to have a noticeable improvement on a game like that, which clearly can make use of the extra 'go' ?

In my very simple mind, it looks like a ~30% cpu clock increase, so wouldn't be wasted if I put a decent enough GFX card in... ?

3.6GHz it is quite low to be honest, by going with a 6600k with some nice OC at 4.5GHz you can expect the single thread performance to increase around 80%.

My Xeon 5650 is working wonderfully in Pro tools...Its running at stock with a silent stock fan and its not even breaking a sweat with loads of plugins running in real time...

Just got my 6600k installed, straight in at 4.6GHz on 1.2v. The multi thread score in Cinebench is only just behind with the single thread score smashing it out of the park.

Despite being clocked 1ghz higher, it runs a lot cooler too..

However, gaming isn't much different. Infact on Firestrike I'm down 400 points due to physics which I assume is multithreaded.

Overall I'm slightly underwhelmed, even at 3.6GHz the Xeon obviously isn't that much of a bottleneck for games. Going to hold out for a week or 2 before deciding if it's worth the £300 to stick with Skylake.

Noticed that I also didn't need to reinstall Windows, it automatically picked everything up. Awesome.

@AiiR Depends on the game really if it is gpu bound you will not see any difference even if the 6600k had infinite power, however on the games that are cpu bound the difference will be grate. I move from [email protected] to [email protected] and I see my fps to increase 60-70% on games that are single thread bounded.

True, some benchmarks are showing massive gains.

Might just roll with it, temps under full load after 10 minutes are the same as what the Xeon used to idle at..

The Xeon may just find its way to the MM soon with the rest of the kit.

Could someone do me a favour and use the bench tab on CPU-z and let me know what single and multi scores you get for 4GHz and 4.4GHz

Thanks! :)

Thanks, just doing some quick and dirty tests on a 4930 at the same clocks. The difference is within 15% which is pretty good for the Xeon.

For x58 ud5 v1 i found a newer bios witch enable vt-d. It works i try it.
You can enable it at ctrl+f1 under advanced menu chipset.
http://www.uploadmb.com/dw.php?id=1461661912

you can read there about it:

Also can anyone witch run a xeon with x58 ud5 make a test for me?
If you run at stock settings(optimized defaults) and run intel burn test you have turbo boot throttling?
The multiplier for a Core i7-920 for example is typically 20.0 and if Turbo mode is enabled, you get a +1.0 boost for a total of 21.0. Turbo throttling can occur at high loads where the +1.0 Turbo boost will start to rapidly cycle on and off hundreds of times a second as you approach the TDP limit.

My gigabyte x58 ud5 with i7 960 dont work well with turbo boost because in hight cpu load my turbo boost throttle.

Anyone here upgraded to a 5820k from a 5650 @4.4 that's what I have and thinking about it gaming only thanks had a quick look Thru but there so many pages ha

You'll benefit far greater by upgrading to a better graphics card (don't know what you have) IMO.

There is no modern game I run that uses 2 or more cores that even comes close to stressing my 5650.

Check out Easyriders posts, I'm sure he mentioned about the upgrade he did from 5650 to X99 being pretty much a futile exercise (I stand to be corrected).

Guys. I'm running my x5670 at 4.2ghz, and i'm sure it can go higher, but..
I'm using Thermalright 120 Ultra now, with 1 fan only (noctua one).
Temperatures are ok, but during stress around 70-80. I'm worried that summertime temp might go up...
Just thinking invest in Watercooling kit (EK or XSPC) which are around 250-300 quid (don't see point of buying AIO).
So the question is, where to invest? sell X58 system and put 300 towards newer system, or get WC and stay with X58.

BTW what rough price i can look for if i sell
Gigabyte G1 x58 Guerrilla, 24Gb Kingston Genesis 1600mhz and x5670 obv with Thermalright.
