1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Is a couple of these in a old Dell workstation still the go to for a home HypeV/VMWare lab? Seriously in need of more CPU horsepower but wary of spending too much on old tech

I have 3 HP 1U servers in a rack with two of these Xeon's in each one, so yes I'd say they're definitely worth it for a VMWare Lab :D.

I agree with you to an extent, but my minimum FPS has definitely improved a lot since upgrading to Skylake. Granted, if I had a better clocking board I probably wouldn't have made the jump!

I'm interested to see how the x5650 compares to the 6600k in Overwatch as thats a very CPU heavy game.
That is what i was expecting as well but tbh so far neither subjective playing or benchmarks bear that out. I know CPU improvements overall are a lot more stark at 1080p, narrowing at 1440p and by 4k it seems it's slim. It could well be my 4k + gpu is the defining factor.

If i get back into Cities or some RCTW that singled threaded IPC speed increase may well show itself.

I play 1080p at 144hz so the improvement in frame stability definitely helped. I used to get slow downs in team fights on league of legends on the Xeon but don't anymore with the skylake.

I know but a bill came up and the funds i would have used went else where so now got to wait till the end of the month when i get paid.

most likely will be sold by then :(
Ask the poster if they'll hold it, if there is little to no interested and you commit to take it at the end of the month they'll probably go for it.

Yeah that's exactly what I would expect too. 60hz at very high res is completely GPU limited but if you're playing low res the CPU is going to be important

hi this is my first post sorry if i butted in im not sure im in the right place to post i have a P6X58D-E MB with a x5650 oc to 4.4ghz 20 gb ram corsair xms3 1333 i also just purchased a 1080 gtx from here when i play gta 5on a1080p monitor i do not get any higher than 85 percent gpu usage on msi afterburner rivertuner and my cpu only uses 40-55 percent could my cpu or ram or monitor be holding it back i was thinking of getting the new skylark i7 6700 would i see a better performance in games any advise would be great

You said:
"my cpu only uses 40-55 percent"

You answered your own question, it's clearly not holding you back if it's only "40-55 percent"

You said:
"i play gta 5 i do not get any higher than 85 percent gpu usage on msi afterburner rivertuner"

What resolution? What refresh rate? What settings? Have you tried any other game? Have you tried against any benchmarks? All of these will answer your question

If you're not even pushing your GPU with a high enough resolution/refresh rate and game settings, or even a proper new gen game then you won't see your CPU or GPU being pushed

If you're playing at 1920x1080 (I'm guessing at 60Hz) then you're clearly not pushing your GTX1080 very much. It's overkill for 1080p. If you were pushing it with a 1440p or a 4K resolution you'd get much higher usage....

Finally, your question is too generic to be specifically about this CPU specifically so should be in another section, probably General Hardware.

gpu usage

i have a 1080p monitor at 60hrz refresh rate i played gta 5 at max settings i also play mirrors edge catalyst maxed out i get around 80-110 fps it uses around 91-98 gpu usage and the fire strike benchmark it was nearly as good as 2 980s in sli would i best save the money instead of buying the new i7 6700 and get a better monitor

thanks

Disable Vsync in GTAV (if enabled) and retest, you'll probably find 100% gpu usage ;)

gpu usage

i have disabled vsync i never have that enabled i reckon it could be the version of the game because i also had the same thing with 970 in sli have tried all the power options to maximum performance in nvidia control panel and in windows control panel ect
