1366 X58 Xeon 5650

The idle temps on my 920 @ 4.2 with 1.28v were initially high 20's and settled at low 30s. When they crept up to high 30's I took it as a signal to clean my water loop.

What is your vcore? is it o/c'd?

its air cooled, only has a slight OC on it of 3.6ghz and this was done by enabling XMP in the bios and changing bck from 133 to 158. Everything else is left on default.

done this after a clear cmos, vcore is 1.240 (didn't do anything with the vcore)

managed to get it to drop to 42C by disabling Q-fan and just letting the mobo do everything. got 2 x rear fans getting rid of heat (1 top and 1 back) and 2 x SP 120s pulling air in from the front. Also did D.O.C.P instead of XMP which gave a 3.2ghz on cpu and a 1805mhz ram OC with same vcore as above

From the information you have given I wouldn't be overly concerned. It is a relatively high idle temp, no harm would be done by re-seating the cooler - so give it a shot.

Is it on the stock cooler? How is it under load? Is your case clean and have good air flow? - it is warm outside and all these things contribute.

If under load the cpu is hitting high 70s the vcore you have stated I would investigate a bit more.

Yup. That's exactly what I'm doing, running 4x4gb in tri-channel. You're correct in that you have to put the sticks in specific slots.

hey mate [and guys]...so, I got 4x8 sticks [matched G.Skill F3] and can't get the system to boot into windows with full 32?...It just sits at the windows logo screen for many minutes, then the spinning wheel/dots for #minutes [I've always reset her, so I dont know if it ever manages to load windows, way too slow and long to find out]. The system appears fine in the bios with all sticks registered - just windows doesnt load. When I remove the fourth stick [from the special tri-channel denoted slot when using 4 sticks], the 24gb behaves exactly as expected. Did you experience anything like this? UD5's and Extremes are basically the same? Thanks a lot for any thoughts :)

No issue with mine at all.

Have you tried different sticks in the same slot?
Or tried any of the other slots?
Tried upping the voltage?

Yeah, I tried absolutely everything - but no cigar :( …but what's better than 32gb ram? '40gb of course!'

Ha, so I wondered what would happen if I populated all banks with my old memory as well, and sure enough, it fired to life - seriously?! So far so good, although the rate is 2T, though I havent tried 1 yet - just stoked that it's working and I got more bang for my buck haha - long live the x58. :)

Even though the board can take 4 sticks, I recommend sticking to 3 unless you need the extra memory. From the reading around that I did, it seems using 4 sticks can impact performance and stability (obviously the extra RAM is better for performance if you actually need that much memory).

Triple Channel is about 25-30% faster memory bandwidth so for any Core i7 socket 1366 CPU its essential to get the most out of it!!

The Asus boards (and most X58 boards in general) run in 'Flex Mode' with 4 RAM slots filled. A hybrid triple channel mode - First 3 slots run in triple channel mode, 4th slot runs in a single channel type mode. Works perfectly on my rig with 4 x 4Gb Corsair Vengeance. :)

So do my 2 x Gigabyte X58 mobos but Flex Mode still takes away some overall performance from the system as it has to make allowances for the 2 different channel types ;)

At best it lets you use the extra Ram stick but do before vs after 3 vs 4 ram sticks its usually slightly faster overall with just 3 sticks!!

Yeah I have 2 8 GiB sticks and 2 2 GiB sticks. Only because I can't use the 2 GiB sticks elsewhere...all my other PCs have low-end motherboards with 2 RAM slots!

Been looking into this, but Gigabyte doesn't list the Xeon5650 or anything like that, as compatible with ANY of their X58 motherboards. I've got the X58A UD3R
http://uk.gigabyte.com/support-down...8D5BBA0B7340&s=Intel Socket 1366&cs=Intel X58
I see 55xx Xeon's on there but they are listed as incompatible with my REV 1 X58A UD3R

I see that Xeon W3690 is compatible with my MoBo. It's also 6 core/12T, and is apparently a good overclocker, but very hard to find no eBay and around £140.

Whats the diff between the W3690 and and the 5650 (other than the 2nd hand pricing).

I've never bothered before, just ran my first three sticks in triple channel and the last in single - in flex mode overall. However, you've got me curious now. What would be an accurate way to test overall system performance in 1)Flex Mode with all 4 slots populated and 2)Triple channel only mode with just 12Gb?

Any synthetic benchmarks the usual suspects like 3D mark etc etc. I did this a few years ago found 3 sticks are overall a few % faster score wise which I put down to the system has to make internal allowances for the flex mode.

Give it a try see what results you get!

Your mobo will be fine with a X5650.

Just like mine is and many more Gigabyte X58 owners here.

Don't worry, I have the same motherboard and I run an X5675 in it. Just make sure you update the BIOS to the latest and you'll be good to go.
