1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Does anyone know of any single socket boards for these that support 6 registered ecc dimms (8gb) - preferably ATX - I'd take any number of slots if MATX (but still needs to be ecc reg)

Im.thinking that a HP z400 board might be worth investigating - but that will have lot of non-standard HPisms I'm sure :/

i can run all the latest games using this cpu and a 970 with decent frames and no noticeable lag even with high settings, am i missing out on upgrading to a newer cpu and gpu ?
would i really notice a difference ?
i am baffled by this as i seem to be doing just fine.

Unless your computer has low framerate, don't bother as you're just chasing upgrades when your rig does everything fine. If you have money to burn, spend it on a audio system for your computer.

this is the thing though, i run a 120hz monitor and no slow downs it just runs fine at 1080p and i use a soundcard and headphones so sound is perfect too.
i just cant fathom why everyone needs such a newer cpu for gaming.

i have also used a 980ti OC to the max and no difference to the 970 8 pack hof i am using now go figure.

e-peen.

Headphones isn't the same as a good audio system, checkout say £250 AVR + £150 speakers.

haha the wife wont be impressed my pc is in the living room, but still i dont get how we need so much power and cpu upgrades on 1080p.

i am still happy with this setup and if i splashed out on a new amd or intel setup i would feel cheated :D:D

Why wouldn't your wife be happy with you playing COD lobbing grenades hours after hours with one of these subs?

I want to upgrade to a 1080ti to run VR as high as possible, afterburner tells me with my current 980Ti @1.5SS my CPU load doesn't exceed 50% very often. My PC is knocking on a bit so was thinking of a new build, a real killer maybe with the Elite Tier Coffeelake Bundle @5GHz...my question is how much would I gain for VR gaming for that kind of outlay? Is it worth it?

I really don't have a clue about this stuff, but when I bench on CPU-Z it seems to be saying my current OC'D Xeon is performing on a par with a 7700k, is this correct, seems crazy to me? On 3DMark Firestrike it scores 14357 which seems quite good...

One does not simply upgrade a X58 6 core Xeon system.

Yes an overclocked X56x0 will roughly match an i7-7700K in multithreaded workloads but be significantly behind in single threaded ones. Basically it'll vary game to game, with newer games (ironically) being relatively more favourable to X58 in this scenario.

Every time you think of upgrading from X58 it looks back at you with puppy eyes and you can't go through with it. :D

Hmmm... £600 to £700 for Ryzen 1700 + mobo + memory??? Not pennies. Will keep running my x58 for as long as I can!

I did this a month ago, should have really held on, but now a month or so is gone, money spent, generally happy, something new to fiddle with.

Some tasks are much faster, Photoshop, and Handbrake come to mind, but a lot of tasks, are meh faster, certainly not 550ish faster, but one other big (ish) plus is, power use, 1700 @ 3.8, is around 70 - 100w lower than my old X5650 @ 4.2GHz

Too me, weird, the x58 still has a high end/enthusiast quality, and the X370 has mainstream feel

I was considering a whole new shiny system a couple of months ago when the Threadrippers came out. I first bought a 1080ti which happened to be a significant fps improvement over my 980ti. Then i played a few games, no bottleneck I can see with my 4GHz @ 5650 with 12GB ram. So just left it at that :D I can play pretty much anything at well over 60 fps at 1440p it seems at high/ultra settings.
