1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Hi guys, i'm a newbie here. I need an opinion from you guys, do you think its worth it to upgrade to x5670 right now in 2018? My current build is phenom ii x4 925 2,8ghz (oc to 3,3ghz) and rx 480 4gb.
Will i see noticeable performance boost in my pc if i get an x5670 and oc it at least to 4ghz or more?
But the x5670 is still kinda expensive here in my country, around 190$ with asus x58 board.
Do you guys think it will worth it?
The xeons are a good way to go if you already have a x58 rig. I wouldn't suggest it if you have to buy a motherboard s they aren't that cheap and are quite old with a good chunk of them being overclocked for years aswell

its true, but buying those cpu and mobo is still cheaper than buying a ryzen 1600, and from what i see in youtube xeon still deliver better performance in gaming than ryzen.
is there a risk if i buy xeon x5670 with msi x58 pro and cant overclock with it?
the seller said that he's already tested it and it running normally, but only on stock.

The motherboard prices, and DDR3 prices and lack of warranty make buying into this madness, I'm only here because I had some DDR3 lying around and I chanced a dead motherboard on ebay that looked ok in the pictures, I gambled on there being something else wrong with the persons system, dead cpu say and them not being able or willing to find out/tell.

Go Ryzen if your a newbie, 1700 would be where my money would go, though there's a ryzen refresh coming if you can wait a while :)

Nah, the Ryzen CPUs can clock nearly as high and will have a 40-50% IPC advantage in most cases. I would also say it's not worth it unless you already have the motherboard.

I highly doubt you can even find recent gaming benchmarks that feature Nehalem or Westmere CPUs, let alone any that show them being faster than Ryzen (unless it was a very early one before all the patches came out for games that were unusually bad with Ryzen).

Ok then, i think my best option right now is buying ryzen.
Thanks for all of your opinion guys, i'll be patient with my current rig and wait for ryzen refresh since it wont be too far ahead, and i dont have the urgency to upgrade my rig too. Much appreciated.

I've not checked what performance is like with Phenom, but I would consider just spending money on a better gfx card.
its true that i will also need to buy a better gfx, but from what i experience in most of the game i have play, my cpu is bottlenecking my gpu. thats the reason i want to upgrade my cpu 1st.

I've oced my cpu to 4.3 or 4.4ghz, ram and cpu cooler (or cooler profile) are letting me down I think. Thinking of a corsair h80 or something and i'd like 16Gb of ram, other then the noise of current freezer 7 pro cooler it's a great chip, I am very happy with it :)

If you can fit one, I'd recommend a 240 AIO. Can barely hear my Seidon even when the fans get ramped up. I say ramped up, they only get to around 1200RPM.

Guys quick question, does xeon x5650 can be overclocked using this motherboard?
Intel extreme series DX58SO
My friend have it, and i think i can ask it from him for a cheap price since he's planning building new pc.

This depends on the gaming title. Your Phenom II is clocked about the same as mine and performance is roughly equivalent to an FX-4300. I have a GTX 970 and like to turn on all the bells and whistles at 1080p. For most newer games with all the graphics options turned on I am GPU bottlenecked. At the moment it would only make sense for me to upgrade to a new platform / CPU if I'm also going to upgrade my GPU.

Most of the newer game tests at gamegpu.com let you show graphics cards with a selected CPU or vice versa.

What it's abundantly clear you do not want, whether your CPU is AMD or Intel, is an AMD Graphics card paired with something like a Phenom II or older i3. AMD's graphics drivers do not cope well with with weak CPUs, and typically have a low-end CPU bottleneck around 30% lower than nVIDIA cards (so you get weird scenarios like a GTX 960 outperforming a R9 Fury X if paired with a weak AMD quad or i3).

Hello Folks, Just bought one of these x5680's, I had a i7 920 @ 4.0 with water cooling...Im not expecting to see any great difference between the two or will I be surprised?
Its a gaming PC with 12 gig ram and a 980ti water cooled as well

It's got two more cores, that means four more threads. Lower power consumption, small nm die, so will run cooler. More cache as well.

You should be able to clock it higher, especially with water cooling.

In some games them extra cores make a big dudifferen. You will be surprised how good these chips are. On water you should get 4.2 GHz easy.

I bought one of these 5670 chips and now I'm trying to over clock it. Have 2 issues, would be awesome to hear what you guys think:

1.) My core temps are wildly different. My coldest core is 20 at idle, my hottest is 32 at idle. I have reseated my heat sink using 2 different thermal paste application methods and I think this second time round I got it spot on, but still temps are 10+ degrees apart. What would you do in this situation? De-lid and re-apply paste?

2.) I can't over clock it. I'm following the general guides that are out there for i7 930s (which is the chip I had before) and the first thing that I do is lower the multipliers for uncore, qpi, dram and cpu to their lowest levels in preparation for playing around with bclock. I haven't moved my bclock up yet, but basically, it doesn't post. I tried turning all the energy saving states on and off... didn't make a difference. I tried turning turbo boost on and off... didn't make a difference... and now I am out of ideas. Not sure why it's not posting?

This is normal. My coldest and hottest cores are ~10 °C different even at idle.

Hmm, does it post at stock but not posst when you try to lower all the settings? If so try just leaving all those multipliers at sensible levels instead of always the lowest. QPI and Uncore normally need to be the lowest when you are overclocking the BCLK a lot (as is needed for these chips). Note that the X56xx range can handle 6.4 GT/s QPI, whereas the original Bloomfield lineup could only handle 4.8 GT/s (except for the Extreme Edition chips). For DRAM just set the multiplier to the highest without overclocking your RAM.
