1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Has to be said thanks to Mr Fujisawa's i920 upgrade thread, or I would never have thought of this route for a cheap upgrade.

Also to the ever helpful people of the Overclockers forum on the whole for their advice and help.

Now to wait until pay day and I s'pose I'd best upgrade the Bios. :)

Glad it was useful, but not as glad as I am that I posted it, and thanks to the others for pointing me to this thread so I could sayve £100s on upgrading!

Just ordered a 5650 from the place at Salford, £65 which seems to be the going price. I was tempted to go for one of the 60's or 70's but they all seem to be from the USA and one of the adverts warned of a possible $24 of added import charges. So it would be just my luck to get stuck with any extra cost.
So a 5650 it is and fingers crossed I can get it to over 4GHz.

It's not so much the charge, more the massive delay whilst they figure out what to charge you. That used to annoy the crap out of me so I just get a mate over there to buy things and send them all as $40 gifts now.

Bit risky, but Parcel Farce tack on about £10 just for their "admin fees".

Disgusting tbh.

Well that's the BIOS updated ready for the new addition.

Good/Bad news is my OC profile no longer loads so my 950 is sat at stock for the time being and I can't remember any voltages etc I had set for a stable Overclock.

Still be good practice I s'pose. :)

ah yes well reminded, I must write down all the settings just in case I have to go back to the i7 920, before the new chip arrives.

Hi guys, I just got my Xeon x5650 from ebay for £50 clocked it straight to 4.2Ghz (1.33v core) on an Asus Rampage II Extreme.

I'm using a 20x Multiplier and 212 BLCK Idle Temps are 32 degrees C. Full Load is at 85~ degrees C. Cooling is a Thermalright Ultra Extreme (TRUE) Old I know... with a 120mm fan (Sharkoon).

Wondering if these temps are too high on Load?

I can also get to 4.3Ghz with ease and a lil more voltage but temps get to 91...

Cinebench gives me 964 @4.2ghz but 970 @4.3. Any good?

I'll be investing in a new case and an all in one watercooling kit. Currently my case is getting a little tight on the inside and gets cluttered with cables... Hopefully with the extra investment on a quality case and the watercooling I can have much lower temps :)

You can add another 120mm rad, replace the 240 with a 360 etc. It's the same cooler that some one else made (can't for the life of me remember who now) but for less than half the price.

The pump/block is large, plus you can add a res if you want to.

There it is. Cooler Master Eisberg. Sadly it was stupid expensive.

I'll be going for one I think to replace my H110. Though no doubt I will add an extra 120mm rad to it for the back of the rig and use a res :)

Well after an initial NIGHTMARE!!!
I have my chip up and running. playing with the overclock now.
I made the noob mistake of bending 1 of the pins in the socket when replacing the cpu(was in a hurry). this resulted in 1 stick of ram not being detected and a lot of frustration trying to find and bend back the **** of a pin.
anyway i got the chip up to 4.2GHz fairly easy, same as my previous i7 overclock but with extra cores of course. I would like to get it a bit higher. but thats for another time.
