1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Well after an initial NIGHTMARE!!!
I have my chip up and running. playing with the overclock now.
I made the noob mistake of bending 1 of the pins in the socket when replacing the cpu(was in a hurry). this resulted in 1 stick of ram not being detected and a lot of frustration trying to find and bend back the **** of a pin.
anyway i got the chip up to 4.2GHz fairly easy, same as my previous i7 overclock but with extra cores of course. I would like to get it a bit higher. but thats for another time.

Ahh yes the quit whilst you're ahead approach.

Glad you got it up and running with no further dramas. Have you noticed much difference from your old 920?

Gaming wise I haven't seen much difference, but general performance is pretty good. The benchmarks I've performed, are to my satisfaction.

Overall, it's far better than my previous i7 920 C0.

Happy Days.

I am hoping that the cooler temps will allow a higher clock speed than I can get on the 950 I am currently using for FSX use, which speed hungry over cores.

Can't see having two extra cores being a problem though, coupled with the new GTX770, when it arrives (who knows when?) I am hopeful of a new system feel. :)

bf4(64 shang) with mantle the minimums are maybe 4-5fps higher. however the minimum on dx11 mode is a fair chunk better compared to the i7 at the same speed.
I have yet to really test other games since I mostly only play bf4 at the minute.

anything over 4.2 on my chip is unstable so I have to settle for (200x21) but im happy with the upgrade for the money and should keep the system ticking for the next while until Intel release a bigger upgrade.
hopefully gta v plays nice with 6 cores.

firestrike overall score increased from ~10950 to ~11550 (290x@1200/1500)

Physics Score from 10271.0 to14249.0

Quite a decent jump for the money that.

Think I might do some bench marks with the i7 in and compare when I get the new X56xx whichever it is. Be good to see, especially as it will probably be in before my new GPU arrives back from being RMA'd (bloody nightmare!)

Ignoring price chaps, do you thing a 8350 to an X5650/70 would be worth it?

2 less cores, but better (I think?) IPC + hyperthreading. But it aso won't clock as high.
Older instruction sets.
It'll use a bit less power.

I'm thinking it over, but not sure if it's a side grade.

I'm struggling to get my 5650 stable above 3.5 . I do a cinebench run and I get bsod when temps are only 50 c with core voltage at 1.34 . yet when I leave cpu turbo on I get 4.177 mz on a 1 meg run so I think the chip is good for 4gz just not sure what to do next .

Just took the plunge

£57 for a 6 core cpu? errrrrr yes please!

Kind of glad I held on to this setup now

I purchased my i7 920 and EX58-UD5 in May 2009

I managed to get 12GB of RAM about 2 years ago for £55, and combined with the GTX970 I got yesterday, I think I'll be ok for another couple of years yet

big big thumbs up for bringing this cpu to my attention
