1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Well been tweaking to get some voltages down.

Its running much cooler now, will be even better when I build my new Luxe case (Alphacool NexXxoS UT60 420mm + UT60 240mm) that I have sitting here as I'm only using a 360 rad currently for this testing with 2x 7970's in the loop too.

Really impressive chip, sure she has more in her too. I'm pretty sure I can get this to 4.4 but it's gonna require more volts for sure.

Kinda like it the way it is, powerful and very cool. It'll certainly do for now!

It's a X5675 mate, I got it cheap though. Was a bit off a one of bargain at £110 delivered. X5675 don't come up often especially at that price.

Had to snag that deal as they are worth more than that normally.

Just got lucky I guess!

If I could shift my 920 in MM for 30 quid i'll punt if I can get a 5650 for 60 but not pouring 100 quid into my x58 system :p

Cheapest I've seen is £69 for that CPU buying from the UK.

It's a cheap upgrade and like you with what you get for the i920 makes it even cheaper. I'll be selling mine soon too.

It's well worth it. Just do it! :p

X58 is not dead by a long stretch. It will keep me going till Skylake lands, and possibly beyond.
I'll be concentrating on the GPU sides of things as that's next in line. Just waiting to see whats going to be worth replacing my 2x 7970's with (not that they need it yet)

Not to mention in the future this X58 platform will be replacing my current hackintosh and will do very nicely for that too!

I know the 920 is a legend in the same league as the Q6600 for longevity

I like the idea of a hex core for 30 quid if I can.

The GTX 580 I got in MM for 50 quid will do me too at 1080p for some winter gaming...Looking at benchies it rivals the R9 270 and will at least keep me warm in my man cave :p
 
What are these like with RAM? Currently running a P6T with a 920C (3.8) and 24gb RAM but these processors say they can take a lot more.

Someone tried 48GB of RAM and it worked fine. Not sure if the motherboards would support even higher density modules.

The maximum RAM they can handle is over 250GB IIRC.
 
Tempting to try one of these and stretch my x58 a bit longer, 5650 is easy to get to 4.2-4.4ish? or should i be looking at a higher model

X5650 has a base multiplier of 20 so it would need your fsb to go to 210 for a 4.2. Personally I think its worth paying a little more just for the higher multi with a higher model. X5660 or higher is better I'd say.
 
I'm just curious to know what temperatures you guys are running with your overclocked Xeons, and what cooling you are using. :)

OK let's put it simply. Clocked to 4ghz or so the 6 core Westmere is competitive with something like the 4770k when threading as it should.

When Sandy first came out I read a review where they clocked both to 5ghz on a chiller and put them head to head, clock to clock. They used the 2600k and in any test where all threads were used the 980x won clearly. Take away the threading and the 2600k won.

However, you're not buying one with threading in mind just yet (it's coming though, see my 8 core analysis thread) but rather based on four cores.

It's an upgrade from a 920-950 because the IPC on Westmere is higher than on Nehalem is it? can't remember what the 920 and 950 were called now (it's been a while).

Either way? when the core support comes there's no doubt that the Xeon will absolutely blow the 2500k away. Games are now wanting cores, not clocks. That's why I got away with switching out a 4.4ghz 8320 with a 1.8ghz (I know, don't laugh, it's the Dell board lol) Xeon and saw no loss in FPS.

I also switched out an 8320 running 4.9ghz with a Ivy 8 core running 2ghz (locked to high heaven :( ) and saw boosts in FPS in games that saw the threads (Metro Last Light as an example here).

The 980x was completely and totally over designed. That's why Intel wanted closing in on a grand for it. They're not stupid man. The 4770k for example is what I class as a disposable CPU. It's not faster than the 3930k and it's definitely not going anywhere near a 4930k (or any of the X edition variants) and that's why Intel charge £430+ for those CPUs.

So the answer I guess you're looking for is yes, the Xeon would be faster and yes, given threading it's still very much a current CPU running current tech.

Many X58 boards (most tbh) support CFX, SLI, X16 X16 dual GPU, triple channel memory lanes (remember, all modern disposables are still running dual channel) and so on.

X58 really was way beyond its time. Intel were still point scoring against AMD. Had they known then what they know now? we'd only just be getting X79.
