1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Looks good although that vcore with level 2 LLC is a little high for 4.4... not all chips the same though and temps are fine.

Impressed it's running at stock QPI voltage

Also your uncore is running high at 3.8, dropping to 3.6 may help if things are not stable but again all seems good!

Keep chipping away at your vcore until it becomes unstable, I have mine stable at 1.344v now so you may get away with a little less...

I think you are then at the limit of your cooling but next step would be try 205bclk for 4.5ghz...
 
Also try the prime test that stresses the memory the most as it may show QPI instability... be surprised if it was perfectly happy at 200 bclk / 1600 ram without an QPI voltage increase.

That would be blend ? as this stresses the memory most.

The earlier IBT maximum run was using as much memory as was available.

I will run a prime latter when I go to sleep to leave it running for a good few hours.

A little annoyed but I suppose not surprised, at least it was only one worker, will have to do some adjustments and then try again.

Do you suggest I adjust the QPI voltage ?

At the moment it is on 1.175 (Auto)




All other voltages/ settings are still the screen shots earlier.
 
Stop running Prime. All you are doing is putting your components under stress that will shorten their life and damage them. It's nothing but a power virus, same as Furmark.

What you want to do is run Asus Realbench 2.0 or later. This will test with real world real apps (like GIMP image editing, HD movie encoding) and so on.

Just watch the temps during the multi tasking test.

Do these chips run cooler and perform much better then my 920?

What is a good place to buy this cpu?

Having said all that if it can pass prime then it should be able to pass just about anything.

I ran the ASUS reabench as you suggested and it didn't even make the machine sweat, a single benchmark run shown below, I

Also ran the stress test for 30 mins.

It didn't come up with any errors in that piece of software but in my opinion until it can run any piece of software then it cannot be said to be truly stable.

Just get a 5650 for 60 quid job done...make sure your mobo has the latest bios installed....

I've got the P6T SE And got my 5650 off the bay for 50

12hrs prime stable was the benchmark of a successful clock.

Finished my 5870 overclock a couple of months ago (details on this thread). However it has taken minor tweaks to finally reach what I can call fully stable. IBT and prime were passing for hours on end.

You may still need adjustments though, and like you if *anything* crashes with what is identifiable as an OC fault then I go back and change something.

It's been a couple of weeks and many, many hours of Dragon Age Inquisition to track down the final voltages, I found the game could crash things when nothing else would. The last couple of weeks have been freeze free (a couple of driver/game ctd but these seem to be for everyone playing).

I could try for 4.4, but 4.2 is much lower power, just under 1.33 and the gain isn't worth the effort.


Crashes during gaming are *why* I want 100% stable :p

Yep, on older chips like theese id agree about using p95/IBT etc. But I certainly wouldn't run it on an Ivybridge or a haswell. Fire up the latest version of p95 small fft at stock on a hw and watch the temps hit tjmax in a matter of seconds.:D
 
I have the Asus P6X58D-E & an i7 950. Is the upgrade worth it? Would the higher clock on the i7 950 be better for gaming?

Depends what clock you run on the 950, but IMO the Xeon would be better at pretty much everything.

BF3 uses six cores, more recent games use up to 8 that I've seen. Then there's the clear multi tasking power of the Xeon. It will murder a quad core with HT.

Just remember, these Xeons are basically 980x/990x.
