1366 X58 Xeon 5650

I bought mine from 400817551135 (search for it).

I just whacked in my X5650 using the same voltages that I was using for my i7-920. Stuck the BCLK at 182 MHz for a maximum of 4 GHz to start with. Running IBT at near-100% load I'm getting temperatures of 55-65 °C! I remember when first overclocking my i7-920 it'd reach the high 80s, although that may have been in summer. Very impressed right off the bat. Maybe this time I didn't get stupidly unlikely like the first time around (i7-920 d0 that'd only go to 3.8 GHz with sensible voltages, whilst everyone else was getting 4-4.2 GHz :().

It's been years since I did X58 overclocking...are there any semi-recent guides? I can't seem to get Turbo Boost to stay on whilst doing Intel Burn Test - it occasionally jumps to 182x22 but then goes back to 182x20 according to RealTemp. Load is 100% and I'm sure it should just be staying at 182x22 with all cores in use. It's clearly not throttling down due to temperature.

CPU-Z says it's constantly at 182x23 = 4.19 GHz, which is clearly wrong.

Ok thanks:)

Get it from Mokkin on ebay. Drop him a message before hand and he'll probably match the price of the other seller above. I wouldn't trust the seller mentioned with the item number above. I waited weeks for a x5650 and had to get paypal involved to get my money back as they did not even respond to emails/messages after I sent the money.

seems a tad low...Im getting 922 @ 4ghz

Like to see how one of theese fares on super pi 32m easy. Not sure if it benefits from raw core speed or more cores. I know it likes high ram speed/latency which haswell excels at. But it would be an interesting comparison.:)

Probably motherboard dependent. I know my motherboard is particularly bad in at least one other aspect (a few MadVR features rely on D3D -> OpenCL interop, which AMD cards perform inefficiently by using system RAM, and my setup was one of the slowest among the testers, even those with worse GPUs than me).

I got 899 @ 4GHz.

My CINEBENCH_R15 runs with different OC settings every time, as it turn out the uncore(IMC) frequency it does affect a lot the performance.

x5650
4.36GHZ (with uncore 3.49GHz) 1005
4.36GHZ (with uncore 2.62GHz) 955
4.24GHz (with uncore 3.39GHz) 978
4.24GHz (with uncore 2.97GHz) 962
3.98GHz (with uncore 3.18GHz) 923

Also from what I have seen ram speed it doesn't affect at all the performance.

Yeah I'll do the test today...what you getting?
:)

Think so but there were a few people in the graphics forum 970 thread on x58 struggling with stability when using those cards as well as graphics cards at x16 - may have been SLI issues though, can't quite recall...

I went with an Inatek usb 3 card from the river. Very good, windows 8 picked it up with native drivers, has 5 ports in the back and a motherboard USB3 connector for case ports.

Didn't bother with SATA III, SSD will still perform really well under SATA II unless you are doing mega large transfers between disks.

Im tempted to give it a whirl as I have a third PCie GFX slot doing nothing....

What about using a sata to usb cable for my ssd?

Now Ive flashed the mobo to support sli It would be nice to get sata 3 and USB 3 working in this 6 year system :D

Yeah I must say I completely agree with you there. I don't even have a SATA III SSD tbh and they still start Windows really quickly.
