1366 X58 Xeon 5650

I still cant decide to go for one of these is there much point for gaming and just general pc use ? also my Corsair H50 is 5 years old now so would probably need to upgrade that also ? im not sure how long they last tbh:)

My 920 is holding up fine in games so i guess its not really worth it for me ill just upgrade the GPU again when needed i guess.

Think i will pass for now and just stick with what i have:)

I would think your 920 will start to bottle neck the gpu's thats one good reason the spend £50 on a xeon

The 920 @ 4ghz is fine for today's games mate....the reason people go the xeon route as it offers hex core tech for around 30 quid after you sell the 920

The xeons also run cooler than 920 too...but the 920 @ 4ghz against a six core xeon at the same clock speed you wouldn't notice the difference in games mate....

ok thanks for your reply :)

If you waited this long on X58/920, then wait a while longer to see what Broadwell-K and Skylake are like imo.

You could put more money into your x58 system with a xeon to get more performance, though remember your putting money into a ancient platform, chipset wis.e

I noticed an improvement in Crysis 3 and BF4 when going from a 4.2ghz 920 to a 4.5ghz Xeon. It may be the clock speed that helps too but I believe BF4 in particular likes more threads.

I also have 2x 970 which probably need more CPU horsepower?

Not 100% to be honest, but for the price it really can't hurt to go for it, if you can be bothered. I think it was a good upgrade as even in windows it seems a bit smooth and it didn't really cost much to do.

You'll get more threads and if the games support it... But bottleneck no...

Th upgrade is a no brainier tho even if for ***** and giggles the cost is so small

What would be a fair price? As the only ones about, globally seem all fixed price.

lets hope there good over clocker's because if not you got a VERY expensive X5650. there is not a lot of 5650 that wont do 4/4.2 and some even go to 4.5+
there is a few people that have gone for 5675/5680 but have found no more overclockability.

that all said i would think you paid lees then £250 each that is the going rate of an i7 980x and you get the same chip, so :) let us know how you get on with the overclocking and when i get down to overclocking my 5650(£55:D) we can compare numbers.

Edit: Just seen there going for £180 each, so you paid £360 ish. do you have a dual CPU system? if not you have to be crazy

Ok was a few pages back, so people may have missed it or forgotten ;).... I have an HP Z600 workstation... which is Twin CPU board and no over-clocking.... What option do I have but put the biggest CPU in? :p

Usage is CAD and 3D scene/data rendering, still and anaimations, with Keyshot5, so bit like Maxon Cinema4D.... So the more cores/threads the better.

I'll have two X5650 for sale if all works out :D (.... they cost me £377 for the pair delivered... hopefully no customs charges on top when they arrive)
