they supposed to have slightly better imc's than the quadcores, you can use a lower uncore freq too (if its anything like the 980x)

ok thanks i have dropped the uncork to x17 just because that's what most ppl tend to run

Set QPI to 1.35 and still stable
Stable at 22 x 191 4.2, because right now i am on air i dropped the multi to 21 and turned on all the power saving stuff. and now the cpu run at 23 x 191.... because of turbo.

is there much point messing with QPI voltage or do i just let it run at 1.35?

Also i have been told and lots of ppl report that the IMC's can cope with anything over 1600mhz, and anything under 1.65V

there will be exceptions but a lot of ppl report that, i got a no boot @ 1866Mhz

Ive put my x5650 in my motherboard and it has booted to windows fine. Does that mean i dont have to do a bios update. Or will it caus instabillity?

What bios is on the board now?
And what board?

After 2hr's or battlefield i can confirm 4.2(4.4 turbo) is a very nice play to be and nothing make it sweat

How much memory is really needed? Right now I have 6GB (3x2GB), and I've not noticed this to be insufficient, but this upgrade had got me thinking. It's there a need to upgrade to 12GB?

All dpends what your doing, as someone that likes to game and have mail, steam, chrome etc open i found with playing lotro i was using 99% of that 6gb so changed to 12gb.
My advice if you arent using all of your 6gb save your $$ as it really depends how you use your PC. In the future i can see that 6gb become more of a hindrance

I have lots open when not gaming, but them I close everything else down when gaming. I need to check memory usage properly before I spend £.

Is it OK to get another 3x2GB and load all six channels, or better to ditch what I have and get 3x6GB?

I seem to remember people back in the day having overclocking issues when using 6 sticks but it could be totally random. Personally I don't see a need for more than 6 GiB of RAM at the moment.

I'm running a 12GB mix of Crucial and Patriot memory at 1600mhz just fine. As for RAM usage.. anyone playing Dying Light? That eats up my 12GB and goes into the page file for more!

Not a shabby board i would update bios, but i cant see you having a problem with getting over 3.8

If you have 12gb been used for games your have a problem somwhere in you setup/system

Nope it was just with Dying Light the other day. I think it was just an issue with me trying unsuccessfully to get Crossfire to work. Disabled it because it's not supported and RAM usage at a respectable 6GB now.

To be fair to P4Clock, it sounds like you did have a problem with your system on that occasion, that being the Crossfire setup.

Yep same thing.

It is a combination of knowledge and the fact that there are far more xeons about from parted servers than there are i7970/980's.
Well they're not exactly the same. There is no i7 equivalent of the X5650 which has 6 cores, is clocked at 2.66 GHz, and has a locked multiplier. An X5650 is basically a cooler-running i7-920 with an extra 2 cores and +1 turbo boost.

The X5680 is nearly identical to the i7-980X, although the former supposedly supports faster RAM. I have no idea if this is actually true though, since Bloomfield only officially supported 1066 MHz DDR3, when practically everyone was using 1333-1600 MHz without issues.
