1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Ok was a few pages back, so people may have missed it or forgotten ;).... I have an HP Z600 workstation... which is Twin CPU board and no over-clocking.... What option do I have but put the biggest CPU in? :p

Usage is CAD and 3D scene/data rendering, still and anaimations, with Keyshot5, so bit like Maxon Cinema4D.... So the more cores/threads the better.

I'll have two X5650 for sale if all works out :D (.... they cost me £377 for the pair delivered... hopefully no customs charges on top when they arrive)

I really don't get why you would spend that amount now...I thought you got the cheapo mobo and plonked two 50 quid chips in it...

why not just get x99 and overclock it....

that a hell of a lot for old tech but.... when you think about it, i would like to see somthing mach it overall power for the same price 12 core's 24 threads and is the work load will use them all then it bang for buck on a different level.

+1 if you have something that can use all those cores it is i agree better then a x99 for the cost

Not seen a "cheap" twin CPU board.... plus I would have needed to buy a bigger PSU I guess , +RAM, CPUs etc, as I was coming from an old P5K-E with a Q9650. I could have stayed with the X5650s, still been a nice big speed bump from old rig... but you know when there's more available ;)

The X5650s are hitting 1338 on Maxon... due to 24 threads..

A render in Keyshot had taken up to 40 mins on my Laptop, i7-4810MQ, similar resolution rendered on the Z600, 11-12 mins...

Z600 is serious bit of "old kit", superb tool free case, very quiet in normal use, and designed to run all day... without the hassle and "risk" of overclooking...
For sure I'll post the new Maxon score in a week or so :p

edit.... Oh and I've not had to spend anything on cooling, how much does it cost to cool an O/C rig these days?

I only have one question .. will a 5650/60 offer a significant improvement from a 920@4 ghz

The prices are on the up. I got 2 last week one £48 and one £55, but my brother is bidding on a few on the bay and the prices are now in the high sixties, also the price of the i7 920 in dropping like a brick i think one sold for £20 on the MM.
If you are going to get a 5650 i woild say get one now because i see them been over £100 soon.

On a flip note if you want to move over to 1150/2011 now would be a good time as your 1366 is worth more now that it was 12 months ago. I got a ud5 board for £115 they was £70 not too long ago

I think my motherboard is just crap, I can't even get to Windows with a BCLK of 200 MHz. Does the QPI/DRAM voltage (I think that's the Asus term for Uncore voltage) need to go up to achieve that? I currently have that at 1.2375 V - the last time I had it higher than that the machine was unstable.

So far so good using 191x22 with VCore = 1.30 V.

Interesting that you've got a 22 multi with a x5650 on the P6T. I've got a P6T Deluxe (v1 I think), and the multi options are the only thing making me consider an x5660 or x5670. Will it hold x22 on all 6 cores under load? Is turbo on or off?

If I get a x5650 then I want to pay around £50, but prices are definitely moving around. I saw one last week for £47 on buy it now, but I was too slow. Not many listed this week, and none below £60. I stopped at £150 on a pair of x5660 over the weekend, and lost out... However, I keep reminding myself that x20 versus x21 multi is only a 5% increase, so I don't want to spend much more on a x5660 over a x5650... I think I will be quick to grab the next x5650 available for £50 or less.

If you set the multiplier to 22x turbo is automatically disabled. It doesn't hold at 22x under heavy load though, so 191x22 becomes 191x20 at heavy loads (3.8 GHz). Hence why getting a higher BCLK would be nicer.

To be honest, theres not a great speed difference between a x 5650 @ 4GHz or a or 5670 @ 4.4GHz so if the 5660 and higher are much more I'd definately get the 5650 again.

Edit, theres a new listed single 5650 for £47.99 on the bay

Can't see it listed... must have gone already!

that CPU is sitting in my system right now :D

I got an email alert as I was getting in the car after work, and thought "I'll get that as soon as I get home!"... 10 minutes later and it was gone!!! Happy for you though... so long as I get one too!!! :D

Did you get two for the price of one? It was weird, I thought that listing had finished, then it came up again as a buy it now.

no i ordered the one for £47, then i got an email saying out of stock sorry...... so i got a second for £57. but both turned up :).

i have to say the i7 920 is not too bad i put it in to flast bios and 3hr's latter battlefield is ok :D

Edit: the i7 920 @ 4.2 is the same performance in 3dmark as my i5 4670(noneK) so @ 3.4
Tbf that no bad for a old ass cpu that cost £34...... In game it feels just as good/stable.

Finally picked up a x5650 for £56... should be here before the weekend. The bigger challenge is finding enough time at the weekend to install it! Time to teach PC building and overclocking to my 7 year old :D

YAY! so i fitted the xeon al last and it a little monster.
I am still testing but i have found my max Blck is 221 @ 16x so i am happy with that, i also have the boost speed multi to play with some repost that they cant use it???

i have just dont my first OC boot and i am at 22 x 200, all thermal/throttle rubbish turned off. about to stat testing but i want some voltage advice.
i have Vcore @ 1.3500
Clock controller @ 800milliamp
all other sertting are at auto, what sort of number's should i been looking for on PLL and QPI

what ram speed? and how much? around the 1.35 mark for 6gb 1600mhz-1800mhz

can use powersaving and normal cpu voltage and add extra cpu v to remain stable through dvid

that way cpu clocks down at idle, pll I never needed to touch
