1366 X58 Xeon 5650

I currently have 5670 overclocked to 4.1Ghz. I have the option to move onto a newer board(x97) but i am not sure if it is worth it or not?

Current setup in sig

Optional upgrade/sidegrade/downgrade?:

4770k or 4790k
Gigabyte-Z97X-SOC Force

I do not want to downgrade but at the same time i am dying to move onto a newer platform/socket. This would not be costing me much if anything.

Am i wasting my time? My pc is mainly used for gaming and do very little encoding etc. I just dropped in the 5670 into my pc to breath some life into my x58 setup.

Would appreciate any advice as i am well out of the loop when it comes to more recent components.

if its a free upgrade then go for it...But tbh I doubt you will notice in games.

I "upgraded" from x58 xeon sold it and bought into x99 and 5930k but sold x99...not worth the 600 quid upgrade cost.

Biggest regret of my pc career...I should never have sold the xeon...I think you will regret it...

Hang tight for a bit until you need it...

I even bought back an x58 rig for my recording studio pc has the extra cores are perfect for multitracking...The xeon is an awsome cpu for the cost.

I just want a more up to date setup, i dont mind aslong as its not going to be slower than what i have.

The main reason for this is because my current gigabyte UD3R is starting to show its age and i dont want to keep it much longer for it to die on me as it has had a fair bit of abuse with the I7 920 and Xeon being overclocked over the years. and i just want a new toy to play with lol...

I definitely think my motherboard will die before my Xeon. Kinda surprised it's still going when the BCLK has been 50% overclocked for 6.5 years but maybe the fact it takes 25 seconds to POST helps? Slow and steady wins the race. :D

Easyrider, what gpu setup were you running and not seeing much of a difference?

Ive just got a surround 1440p 144hz setup. In surround, The FPS seems pretty much expected at a bit less than 4k benchmarks, but in 1440p I seem to be getting less FPS than people with only two 980ti's. I'm leaning towards its probably my CPU/mobo (two of the cards are PCI-E 2.0 @ 8x) limiting my GPUs, although I need to do some proper investigation before spending any money.

Im basically getting 90-130 on fallout 4 and battlefront and a few other games I've played haven't been hitting 144, yet people with two cards are getting 130-160, or at least, more than me.

Also need some additional USB 3 ports for VR etc anyway.

Yeah multi gpu will be a factor on x58
I was running a single card

If I had nearly 1500 quids with of gpu I wouldn't be using x58 as you clearly have the money to upgrade.

So, i've had my 5670 for almost a year now and was wondering, what would be the next gen XEON super chip to be had for very little money, i dont mind getting another rampage spec / level board if i can get this much computing power for £50 !

All Xeons from Sandy Bridge to Haswell have locked multipliers and only support very limited BCLK overclocking. Skylake does, however, support BCLK overclocking once more but Skylake-E is quite a way off from launching, let alone being old enough for old Xeons to surface for peanuts.

It's highly unlikely that there will be ever be one as Intel have plugged that particular loophole and definitely not for so little outlay. :(

You should swap your current server Rig that has the 4790k and make that your gaming machine! ;)

Yea, it was purely as I already had the x58, i stuck in the xeon as I wasnt seeing much cpu limitation before, then again I was on 60hz, so it didnt matter.

Will look into it.

That is a possibility I hadnt thought about actually. The servers main duties are plex and mumble, with the occasional game being hosted for a while - so I imagine it could cope fine with it.

Could swap the z97 from my htpc, the 4790k from my server etc around, to make it slightly better matching on components rather than the hoge poge I ended up with from buying whatever was on offer/second hand available at the time.

Will check out what the boards I have support PCI-E lane wise and see if its feasable, otherwise X99 will probably happen over the next few months.

Edit: meh, both the z97 and z87 boards in my other machines only support two way SLI :(

Hi Guys

I'm still rocking my x5650, but wondering if anyone has got 48gig working in a pt6d board, as I use it for a lot of virtualisation work.

Thanks
T

If you've got £3000 burning a hole in your pocket. ;)

Probably pick one up cheap on the bay.

Having a search on the bay now for some cheap x56xx chips, want to build a secondary PC for video rendering and a dedicated stream PC for Twitch, Hoping I can find a SR-2 "cheapish" as well.
