1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Probably pick one up cheap on the bay.

Having a search on the bay now for some cheap x56xx chips, want to build a secondary PC for video rendering and a dedicated stream PC for Twitch, Hoping I can find a SR-2 "cheapish" as well.

Good luck finding any X58 board cheap, unless you find a defective one that has an easy fix to it.

My EX58-UD5 died on me last week - I guess 6 or 7 years of i7 920 and X5660 4GHz+ overclocks took it's toll on the board. Can't complain too much about that I suppose.

Luckily I had a friend with a spare X58 Sabertooth which I got for nothing. Even supplied me with decent 4GB ram sticks instead of my 6 slower 2GB sticks and a 930 so that I could flash the BIOS!

Couldnt get the Gigabyte board past 174BCLK, but this thing is at 185x23 and that was after just an hour of tinkering with an unfamiliar BIOS. Temps do go into the 80's with a 280mm AIO radiator during torture testing though so I'm not sure how much higher I could get it.

It's bloody nice having SATA3 and USB3. Only a decade late to that party!

Currently trying msi's email support to see if they have any information regarding the locked uncore multiplier in my board's bios.. They're response was "Regarding your concern, please double check the cpu model,if it is X5650?If yes,we have checked the cpu test report of this MB,this board cannot support cpu X5650.Please refer to link below at MSI website for a try. Thanks!":rolleyes:.

Hi guys,

Just bought a X5650 on Ebay - still in the post but am a bit unsure of a few things. I have a i7 920 C0 at the moment and never really got it past 3.8Ghz - perhaps due to not understanding enough or trying enough ... or perhaps because I'm running memory in Dual channel .. not sure.

Anyway I was looking around for settings for the Asus p6t Deluxe that might get me started the Xeon and found this link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZadS1WdsMYE

I wonder what people think or if they concur with the settings. One thing that strikes me here is that if you look at his QPI link data rate (see @ 0:38) it's well above 7k and in guides I've looked at including the calculator here:

http://icrontic.com/files/apps/nehalem-calc/

.. it tells you that this is likely to cause instability.

Can anyone confirm or deny this particularly on the P6T?

I'm using the same settings as tribz, I get an "overclocking failed" notice on a cold boot but a quick "F1-left-enter-enter" into bios usually saves the settings again and restarts so it boots up fine. It's happy to do 3 day gaming sessions or 12 hour render sessions (not put more through it) so at 4ghz it's stable enough for me. Also came from a C0 920 that didn't like to go above 3.8ghz.

These were my settings on the P6T when I had it (not deluxe)

https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=26833506&postcount=207

Wam7 has it now and hes gone further so maybe able to post his BIOS settings

Thanks for that. I'm interested in how your UCLK frequency ends up @ 3208.
Firstly my board (and this may be one difference between the deluxe) doubles the figure ie. x36 rather than x18 but if I put those setting in it will be well over 7000. Of course I'm doing it with the 920 on board as I haven't got Xeon yet but I didn't think that would change.

BTW. I am not able to find what people refer to as the QPI/PLL in the Asus bios. Is this called something else or does it not exist?

Edit: disregard the frequency comment - I got confused between UCLK and QPI link data rate which you've got on auto.

I have had some very wierd stuff happen with the Asus P6T in the past much of which I was never able to explain. It seems to behave abnormally in certain situations but then suddenly behaves itself for no apparent reason. :)

I had the Asus P6T Deluxe board initially when I first got my I7 920, I had similar weird random issues with it too so got rid of it and replaced with the Rampage Extreme III

Hi Guys

I'm still rocking my x5650, but wondering if anyone has got 48gig working in a pt6d board, as I use it for a lot of virtualisation work.

Thanks
T

Bought 48GB RAM and working a treat. Just need a new GFX card now to replace my 7850... Then should be good for the next couple of years, hopefully :D

Still working on it.

My GA x58 UD5 still has some life in it.
Got a x5670 for £65 on the bay. and NhD14 £45

My 920 D0 @ 3.8Ghz done me well..

Probably a stupid question, but on a 5650 the turboboost multiplier is obviously x23... Is there any way of using that permanently or is it hidden?

Nah boosts them all from 3.6 to 4.1ish, but drops when playing games. :(

The BCLK is what is holding my OC back as it's linked to the uncore, which is locked to x20.

Hi Guys

Just picked up a X5650 of the bay for £65 looking forward to having a play with it when it arrives :) going to replace my trusty old corsair h50 hydro at the same time also with the new Antec H600 Kuhler 120mm AIO Liquid Cooler which are £40 so not to bad should keep her going a few more years lol:o
