14900k problem

I looked at your pic and had a looked at user manual, it appeared in the pic you plugged 2 ATX power connectors to A: ATX_12V_1 and C: ATX_12V_PWR so it seemed you forget to plugged in 3rd power connector to B: ATX_12V_2. You will need to plug in three power connectors to ports marked A, B and C accorded to manual motherboard diagram.

Well spotted, would not have seen that. Also would have assumed (huh, that doesn't always work out well) that that would be done.

Good catch, whether it works, fingers crossed, or not.

Considering you can't boot, worth trying with both connected. Perhaps the new BIOS update made it require both cables to be connected? Won't cost you anything to try ;)

That is why I thought it was a PSU issue at first ie no boot and lack of power. For his information I do have both the cpu 12v power leads connected on my Asus motherboard/7800X3D , guess it's one thing that can be overlooked by some users.

He should definetly try both connected.

I’ve just tried it with both 8 pins connected with both cpus and still nothing at all turns on, just rgb.
Next step is ordering a cheap Z690 board (£150 on OCUK, less if you're happy with B grade/clearance/ddr4 boards) just to prove it's the board at fault.

Or, RMA your current board, though I imagine that will take at least 2 weeks.

I’d be tempted to use the opportunity to jump on AM5.
Even going by your previous erroneous/unhelpful posts this is a new standard for you. :(

I’ve got this coming tomorrow.

Asus ROG STRIX Z790-A GAMING WIFI, Intel Z790

Will try the 12700k first just in case it needs a bios update for the 14900k.
I have the same Z690 motherboard. Let us know how you get on with the new motherboard - I would guess your CPU's are fine and it is the Z690.

I only saw you mention that you tried a flashback to 2004 but just in case you haven't I also suggest trying to flashback to some of the interim bios's as well like the 2103, 2204, 2305 etc using your 12700K. I know it will be time consuming but before you definitely write off the motherboard I would give it a try. Also make sure the flashback is done properly so that the light goes off, if it stays on then it didn't take for some reason.

On that note you might want to try different a USB stick if you have one as I've had issues where motherboards didn't do Flashback properly because of the USB stick I was using.

Good luck with that ☺️

Whilst it might not have helped, I do wish that all motherboards had a dual BIOS facility.
Perhaps even socketted BIOS chips, that helped me years ago with a DFI failed update, and the hot swapping of BIOS chips
It would most probably have helped as my Z390 motherboard had dual bios and because of it I was able to fix a bad bios flash that would normally have meant the motherboard was bricked. I switched to Bios2 and booted fine, which I could have just carried on using but from there I forced a flash back over Bios1 which fixed it.

Alas, motherboard manufacturer's are giving us less and less but charging us way more in return; you don't even get a post code on some higher end motherboards!

Was gonna say, if you're not in a hurry im not far from you and i have a spare psu that could test your system on if you wanted to go that route.

But yeah since you have the motherboard coming anyway its defo worth checking that first.

Agree re the extra power connector. At least rule it out.

Also - bit rudimentary and I'm sure you've done it. Any contamination on the bottom of the CPU. What TIM are you using.

Nothing on the bottom of the cpu and I’m using NT-H2 paste. I’ve read a few threads on Reddit and apparently there is some later bios from Asus which are bricking boards. Hopefully the new board works. I’ve sent the old motherboard off for rma this afternoon so it will be interesting to see what they find, I’ve also rma the chip just to rule that out as well. I’ve got a z790 board coming which I’m going to use with my 12700k in the mean time, that way I don’t have to update the bios and risk it again with the 14900k.

Thanks all for your help and suggestions and I’ll definitely update this thread once I’ve got the results of the RMA’s.

Interesting to see how this plays out. I had an infuriating time with my system not booting at one stage, similar to you and the issue turned out to be the CPU not being seated 100%

I have your board and upgraded from a 12900ks to 14900kf without any issue at all. Was at the latest bios of a month ago whatever that was and now on latest... Fingers crossed it all works out.

I have the same motherboard and I went from a 12700k to a 14900k.

Before I put the 14900k in I updated to the latest bios and reset the bios to stock settings then put the 14900k in and luckily it worked.

From the pic it looks like you only have 1 of the cpu power connectors in? If you haven’t got both connectors plugged in try that?

Are you overall happy with what you have found with the 14900k, compared to the 12700k you had?

Thanks

I’m happy with the upgrade yeah. On the 12700k I ran it at stock settings and I’m doing the same with the 14900k, slightly undevolted though with some advice on the forum.

Tbh I upgraded because I had the upgrade itch and I felt like it would make a difference. I’m not sure if it’s all placebo but I do think windows feels snappier in gaming and having other apps open.

Seeing 5.7ghz on the p cores compared to 4.9 ghz on the p cores when I’m playing cpu demanding games just makes me feel better lol.

Sounds good to me. As long as you are happy making an informed choice that's all that matters

What is interesting is to see the E cores being used in some games that support them.

Did you sell your 12700k?

I like the idea of having the best cpu my motherboard can support and it’ll last a bit longer than the 12700k. I’ve tried tinkering with the settings on the 14900k with the intel xtu ai optimisation but the temps easily hit 100 degrees with their settings so I just turn xmp on and have a slight undervolt and all is good now :)

No I’ve not sold the 12700k I probably should though.
