14th Gen "Raptor Lake Refresh"

Does all this (and announcement on meteor lake coming to desktop) mean if one is upgrading in next few months, is it worth going to the raptor lake refresh? IF coming from an I7 2600K?

Intel has made quite a mess of messaging at this stage. I'd just sit tight and wait for an official announcement within the next month to see where MTL-S desktop and RPL-Refresh sku's come into play.

I don't think the confusion with launch dates for Meteor Lake desktop and Arrow Lake desktop is going to be cleared up by Intel until the whole of the 14th generation (RPL Refresh) has been released, so probably January 2024.

It does look like Meteor Lake on desktops could end up being quite short lived. Intel hasn't marketed Meteor Lake for desktops at all, perhaps it's not going to be a full generation of desktop CPUs.

This reminds me of when Intel had to brute force their CPUs to the limit, just to try and keep up with Athlon 64. AMD are putting the hammer down with Threadripper,EPYC,and Ryzen.

Intel still has Emerald Rapids ('Intel 7' process with 'Raptor Cove' cores) and Granite Rapids (3nm or maybe 4nm) to release for their server products.

It does make me wonder if the 'Intel 4' process is ready for volume production yet (aside from mobile chips), or will that only occur in the 2nd half of 2024?

I can see why they would use 'Intel 3' for the server version of Meteor Lake though, as that should allow Intel to increase the max CPU core count.

EDIT - It says here that "Granite and Sierra can be thought of as a deconstructed Meteor Lake processor, with Granite getting the Redwood Cove P-cores, while Sierra gets the Crestmont E-Cores".

Sapphire Rapids has more than 60 P-Cores, and Granite Rapids is expected to have more P-Cores, so I'm not sure why Meteor Lake would be limited to 6 P-cores on desktop, especially since the new LGA 1851 socket should allow for higher core counts.

In new more detailed info turns out MTL is not coming to desktop in the traditional sense but rather all-in-one systems with it being a more mobile focused architecture.

Yep. Hopefully Arrow Lake is a decent uplift, and at least another good uplift after that on the same new platform, would give it better longevity vs buying into AM5 most likely.

Sure I read rumours of an Arrow Lake refresh a little while back, but hopefully whatever chips come afterwards are good jumps too whatever they are.

Wow, Intel was definitely being economical with the truth, when they said MTL was coming to desktop PCs.

Sounds like they will be the same/very similar chips to the CPUs used in their mobile lineup, and officially be part of the 14th generation lineup.

It's notable that Intel has not yet promoted Arrow Lake as being ready for 2024, like they did when they produced slides saying that MTL will be ready for 2023.

But, the article does say this about Arrow Lake CPUs:
"This is scheduled to appear in the second half of 2024, and this statement from Intel is also supported by motherboard manufacturers who are not only preparing the current Raptor Lake refresh behind the scenes, but are also already working on Z890 mainboards for Arrow Lake".

The above points to a mobile and desktop launch for Arrow Lake in 2024.

So........RL refresh being the last of the 1700 socket CPU's and AL being the next socket that will also bring the Z890 boards for the desktop user...?

Right(ish).......?

Not much point asking when the AL boards and CPU's are expected..?
