Bit like RAM really... I'll happily recommend brands other than Corsair, but if I was parting with my own money, I'd much prefer to pay the slight premium and buy Corsair, despite the fact that there is very little reasoning behind it...

GPUs are very similar to ram. Given that they are usually made by one or two manufacturers (Elpida or Hynix) and then just have something stuck on them before being sold as a branded product.

Heatsinks on ram have been pretty much proven to be a waste of time, yet, it's quite amazing how much value they seem to add.

I also usually pick Corsair products. Not because they are better than others, but simply as I have used their warranty service and they are excellent.

Mind you, they are in every way identical to Patriot's products given they both reside in Holland :)

It all just comes down to warranty in the end.

America have already put their clocks forward by 1 hour whereas we do ours this coming weekend. That means the time difference between the west coast of America and the UK is only 7 hours at the moment, rather than the usual 8. As such, 6am PST = 1pm UK :)

Also, see this...

Thanks mate, that site shows PST as UTC-8 so are you sure?

Anyway the F5 mash is set for 13:00 tomorrow just to be safe :D

£576 is an awful awful lot of money to pay for a SLI set up that relies on 1.5gb vram.

SLI GTX 480 are also far faster than a 7970 or 680 and only cost £390 or so.

Yes the 480s are also good VFM.

I'm yet to be convinced that we need the 2/3GB of vram we are seeing. Just because someone shows their GPU using 2GB of ram doesn't mean performance would drop if you had less vram, I continue to believe a GPU won't get rid of data in it's ram that it no longer needs until it hits a vram limit.

GPUs must cache textures and other data in this manner rather than disposing of data no longer needed to render the current frame.

Edit: Of course there are situations where such vram is needed: multi monitor gaming with certain AA modes, I'm talking about in general.

It's not a problem now. BF3 is OK with 1.5gb. The problem will arise when things like BF4 and all of that come to light.

I almost traded my 7970 for SLI 580s but then thought better of it. Last thing I need is a couple of paperweights a year down the road.

When bf4 comes to light a new gen will be out. I think more vram will be used when the consoles move to their next gen machines.

when bf4 comes out, all of the cards we are discussing will be paperweights and we will have bought another 5 newer cards, etc etc

Yep, check this as well for current "real time" time...

Look at either Los Angeles or Las Vegas. At the time of posting they are about to hit 10am and here in the UK we are about to reach 5pm. 10am + 7 hours = 5pm :)

or if you prefer you can do it in 24hr clock. 10:00 + 7 = 17:00hrs = 5pm

where is pyramid?

we need pyramid

Is this really due to massive amounts of stock ......they can't move for 680's :D:D:D

Or Nvidia have decided to put the 680 in very large boxes to emphasise its masculinity :D

Gotta say, I do love a nice big box (ooer, matron). I found the XFX one my 7970 came in to be rather insulting for a £439 card :D

I need to know what time it goes on sale, what time should I turn up at the shop? I don't want to get there and be told I gotta wait for god knows how long. Come on ocuk surley you can tell us what time it goes on sale.

Or because they're still trying to shift stock of that 7970 pyramid, so no space for the 680s! :D

Since the 7970 launch has there been any periods at all of low / no stock? Seems like there's always loads of most of the brands in stock. Seems a good indication of too high pricing if the 'must-have' gear doesn't shift at a reasonable rate. Lots of threads about the recent top-end i've not read it all- has OCUK said how many 7970's / 7950's they've shifted since launch? Would love to know at what rate they're selling
