1984 Arrives

If this is what it takes to guarentee our safety in our our country, and the protection of our citizens and our children then, I feel it is too much.
It will be a loss of what we take to be part of our freedom.
Let the Star out fully please. blow something up once in a while, let the gchq and police get warrents like they currently do.

Really? The BBC wording is a bit ambiguous. If true then that's definitely out of order.

no it's not it's very explicit.
A new law - which may be announced in the forthcoming Queen's Speech in May - would not allow GCHQ to access the content of emails, calls or messages without a warrant.

But it would enable intelligence officers to identify who an individual or group is in contact with, how often and for how long. They would also be able to see which websites someone had visited.

This is one law I will join a protest against

Protest in this country has long been established not to work and very difficult to do without ending up on a watch list, kettled for the day, and probably beaten, arrested with your supposed "rights" being taken away.

The only thing left is indeed a V for Vendetta style campaign imo.

Look how all the pathetic people joined in on the side of the state against the disenfranchised youth during the riots, but haven't done a damn thing about the bankers and politicians who bankrupted the country.

For example this ^, they could snoop your post using the new hardware and arrest you because of a terrorist threat

Not to forget the warrant to read our emails & texts and listen to our calls for posting on the same thread as a person labelled a 'security threat' ;)

I'm half expecting some sort of event that helps push this through, bets on dawn raids on cyber terrorists or those downloading illegal porn in the coming weeks?

Nothing to hide....

Not a problem, people who break the law should take the consequences, but it isn't just about people who break the law.

What happens if you happen to disagree with the Government, or you are exercising your right to protest against cuts / job losses etc. You're peaceful enough, but your email data has now been flagged. Who decides if you are subversive or not?

History has a very bloody record of those that didn't do anything wrong, but were eliminated by the Government of the day, purely for having differing views.

You talk to your representatives. That's what they are for.

Not that I agree with what's going on but I thought they could already access this information. Isn't that one of the main attributes of GCHQ, to intercept communications?

I'm sure they do. But legally?

Remember the phone tapping scandal. Hypocrisy at its best. It's ok when it's the government because they are 'responsible' and look after the public's interest, right?

ok if this be serious.. looks like this will be only the 2nd time in all my years of being alive i will be taking up me pitchfork to protest... and i am one lazy apathetic dude...
