It's not necessarily used to exactly pin point a single individual, in your case it'd mean they could present what info they do have on the household to enable further investigation which would then likely reveal the specific individual.

Remember this isn't necessarily there to investigate online/internet crime, it's there to supposedly aid authorities in investigating anything.
 
Whats the point of monitoring calls and texts of a pay as you go phone? Surely if you are up to something 'dodgy' you would not be using anything that could be traced back to yourself? Same thing with the net, plenty of free access points around why would anyone be using there own connection..this is just a waste of time and resource in my opinion.

They're not going to do this without just cause. No one is going to just paralyse your assets because they feel like it, only if they feel like your a threat to the countrys security.

What you think is safe and normal now can suddenly change further down the line. It's a thin edge of the wedge and we have to finght this now before it gets to big to fight later on.

This is an issue about whether the government and security forces be the ones to decide this or if a judge should be the one to decide this. Personally I prefer a decision by an independant judge. If you want to give government and police free rein to do whatever they want to whoever they want then I despair for you, try not to get conned by any Nigerian princes who are only asking for your money for the "good of the nation".

What's to say that in 50 years time a more despotic regime is in control of the country? All of a sudden we can't stop them from snooping into our private lives to see if we're talking bad about them because in 2012 we signed into law a bill that gives them every legal right to do so.
 
But i do and i'm going to clone your IP address, and hack your email and start sending messages of hate to people, and join unsavoury message boards using your details.

however under the patriot act in America there have been thousands of unwarranted and unaccounted for wire taps, once they don't need a warrant they don't need a real reason ,they've gone after thousands of people and there isn't even a recorded reason for why they were tapped.
 
If they start monitoring our traffic will we be able to earn Kudos points for how many times we visit porn in a day ?
 
All those that say they have nothing to hide - why are you not actively campaigning for this kind of monitoring? It would make the world a safer place, and you would not be detrimentally affected by it. The technology is there, you should be lobbying the government to implement it. If it makes it a lot more effective at tracking criminals it would probably mean we can avoid tax increases for policing.

Or is no one lobbying for it, because they would prefer to have some privacy, despite what they say publically?

The only way people will succumb to a police state that monitors your every move is by gradual step change. Put in more CCTV, monitor telephone calls, start to monitor internet traffic, monitor all traffic real time, allow govt to take control of webcams etc.. if you put in all of those overnight, there would be a revolution. Put one in at a time and people disgruntingly accept them bit by bit.

Those of a criminal persuasion will use the public net for misinformation (what better way to supply misinformation than anonymously input it directly into government systems?) whilst communicating off-net or through subnets.
 
What next? Hardware key loggers than uploads everything we type to the government? Hidden cameras in all rooms of new build houses? Limits on how much chocolate or other fatty foods we buy? Cars that enforce the speed limit and auto fines of you exceed it?

Those serious about committing terrorism and want to coordinate and exchange information will surely switch to alternative, more complicated technology anyway, surely?

To be honest, it was no less useful than yours.

There has been nothing more proposed than giving the government the ability to see who people talk to via certain methods, hardly a big deal. All the talk of "what next, cameras in bedrooms?!" is just complete tripe.

It really doesn't bother me, I don't understand why you think I would care that the government know what websites I go on, google already know, as does my ISP. I'm hardly worried about the tech guy at Gov HQ having a giggle at my choice of "personal time" :D.

Well I do, and it should be my choice who knows that information. By your inaction you are allowing your government to take that information from me without my consent. Congratulations on your country turning into a police state.
