1day Acuvue me a car for £6k ish

Common guys, a front wheel drive Passat is not a rival for a 5 series in terms of ride, grip and quality and everyone knows that.

Sorry, but it just isn't. The 5 is in another league. It's several classes above the Passat. The Passat might just scrape by as an Audi A4 alternative - just - but 5 Series? Don't be daft.
Why isn't it? I'm not being awkward but I really don't see what the 5 has that makes it such a better car, beyond the brand name.
What features, materials, tangible benefits do you get from the 5 that the passat doesn't have, and I don't even mean a modded one.
I've been in a 5 and the interior did not wow me, not compared to a passat one,

Handling and "feeling" in cars are subjective, and please note I did specifically refer to a comparison between the passat and a 520, neither are stormingly fast or anything like sports cars, they are both motorway barges, and in that view I don't see a lot between them

Is that even worth answering?

What does the 5 Series, widely regarded as one of the finest all round cars in the world at the time it was available new, have over an FWD A4 based Passat, widely regarded to be 'not quite as good to drive as a Ford Mondeo'?

If you were right in what you said then poor Audi missed a trick - they tried for years to get the A6 to be better than the 5 Series and failed, seems all you think they needed to do was rebadge the Passat and flog that ;)

Damn, was just about to respond before your edit;

Humour me and answer it, school me if necessary, quoting opinions isn't something I can quantify. I can understand that the higher models 5s were widely regarded as a great "total package", we're looking here though at one of the lowest models so it doesn't have performance in it's favour, and without the performance how much does handling prowess really factor?

The biggest thing anyone has to get over when competing with someone like BMW is the brand, it's not good enough to be as good as the leader you have to be better, and I don't think it's possible to be enough better than BMW in virtually any area to overcome the brand and perception of prestige owning a BMW bestows (wrongly IMO but MO isn't what matters to everyone else).

I think the real reason that audi compete more with BMW now is the perceived dilution of the BMW brand, now it's a lot more accessible to the average person the prestige is tarnished and people are starting to realise that their competitors have some equally competent cars.

Ill be the first to admit that for the likes of us forumer's, the BMW is guna be a much better car, even for the money, than the passat. But like certain women who drive corsa's and all the other super mini's in the same price bracket and come away with a corsa C, theres different strokes for different folks.

My dad and my nieghbour, both old men (dads 64 nieghbour is easily 75+) chose the passat over the BMW, Audi, Skoda, Ford and Vauxhal barges because to them, it was by far the most comfy and easy to drive. Baring in mind my dad hated the 2.0T model because he said the accelerator pedal was to sensative (he bought a TDI 130)

So for some, the BMW is not the sex machine you make it out to be, allthough im sure your right, the way we like to drive cars, its bound to be better if what people say about them is true.

The old Audi A6 was never a match for the 5 Series IMHO. New Audi's are excellent but not for £5-6k.

If you did fancy one:

Audi A6 2.4 Quattro £5995

I'd say comparing a Passat and 5 Series, even at similar prices is like comparing a top end A4 and poverty A6. Doesnt the 5 series have bootspace and cabin space in its favour?

Yup, the last prefacelift models are X reg. That is a prefacelift car which presumably has the poorer 2.0 engine. I would not buy it for that reason, but you may like it when you drive it I guess :)
Just noticed this after some last minute research before we go and see it :o
In which case I'd rather not go for it although we can still go and take it for a spin to see how they drive :)

Although for £6k you should be able to get a better JDM spec import...

:D

Eww :/

I drove Dexy home from work today and gave a mate a lift home .. he said to me " I bet you're gonna miss this baby " and I am :(

The time has come to be sensible though , it just doesn't make sense having a car like this when she hardly gets used , she needs to go to someone who will ride the biatch a lot more than I do ;)

Also we need our comfort on our trips to Swansea and Dexy's not it - the suspension is so solid she's like a bloody Go Kart ! - Great fun to drive but so not comfy when you're doing a 4/5 hour journey ;)

Sorry to semi-hijack, but in the next few months I'll be buying something similar for similar money but was looking at the 3 series sports coupe. I don't even see the 3-series mentioned here so would I be smarter putting my money on the 5? I'll hopefully have more like £7.5K by June/July as well. I have owned a Mondeo in the past and wouldn't be adverse to getting a much newer one but I did prefer the drive of the X-reg 3 series my dad used to own. For the purposes of discussion though, given I'm hypothetically getting a BMW, where should I put my money?

The E46 Coupe is a decent car, you are looking at about £7-8k and up for a good one though, even with high mileage.

I'd rather have a 5, but then thats becuase I'm odd.

Thanks Piggymon, I feel the same way about FTO's

:p

Well wev'e just got baqck home after taking it for a little spin :)
Must say that it was an extremely smooth ride and didn't feel quite as gutless as I thought it might for the 2L. Car was in extremely good condition apart from a part missing from the console in the rear below the air vents (what sits in there?). One owner, bought from and serviced by the same dealer throughout so exceptional history. Has all four keys as well. May need some new tyres soon though so can knock down on that.

It all comes down to what he can offer for Dexy. If the price is right then we may well go for this even though I think we could maybe get a touch better car (facelift, 2.2). If the deal is right then I'd be happy.
