In future I shall base my predictions on fact. I shall do this by time-travelling into the future, checking the race results, travelling back in time and then posting my predictions (based on factual race results), on this forum.

exactly.... thats why i was confused about what FrankJH was rolling his eyes at....

You cant make predictions now?

anyone know where I can find a high res verision of the pic with Hamilton @ Silverstone driving towards the camera in the rain.

Googled, getty'd etc etc cant find :(

Hockenheim. Lewis had to pit from the lead and came back in third. Made short work of Massa then Nelson Piquet.

Indeed. Hamilton had to fight past:

1) his team-mate - ooh, what a shock....he didn't put up much of a fight....I'm stunned
2) Massa, who had brake problems
3) Nelson ******* Piquet Jnr, who hasn't exactly set the world alight in his season of ineptitude

Yes, indeedy. Hell of a surprise that he made it back into the lead, isn't it?

*sigh*

I don't honestly know why people hold Hockenheim '08 up as an example of Hamilton at his best. It wasn't. Not by any stretch. It was merely him doing exactly what he and his car were capable of. He's been much more impressive on numerous occasions in the past, even when not taking a race win.

And he didn't exactly take this championship in crushing, convincing style did he? I know there was all the mucking around this year thanks to the FIA, but come on - he could at least have made a bit of a show of it in Brazil by going out and fighting Massa for the win. Instead, there's just the artificial excitement of will-he-won't-he with Glock (I think?) right near the end - when it was plainly obvious he would make it into 5th. Anyone who was actually excited by this finale....you ought to watch Australia '86 - that was excitement. Mansell's tyre blowing in the biggest possible way, Piquet needing to pit, Prost skulking through and taking the title. Epic. Hell, even Hungary '92 was more of a nail-biter - because Mansell was involved, and if a title could be lost then Mansell would find a way to lose it. Even with the Williams FW-14B, I can remember thinking that there was still a chance that he'd manage to lose the title that year. He didn't, of course....but there was always that feeling that he could have.

This year, by contrast, was a bit.....2003. That year, the deck had been artificially stacked against Schumacher and Ferrari thanks to the points system changing specifically in response to them dominating in '02. Oh, but of course....what am I saying? Ferrari International Assistance must have been in play. No, they didn't do it in response to Ferrari winning. Of course not. No, they did it because.....

....um....

....um....

....um....

....aaaaaaaaaaaaaaanyway. The deck had been stacked against Schumacher and Ferrari. And the deck was stacked against Hamilton and McLaren this year at times. But anyone who bet against Schumacher taking the '03 title at the start of the final round was a fool, and anyone who bet against Hamilton at the start of the last race this year would have been one as well. It was only McLaren who could completely **** this one up, and they managed not to. Surprisingly well, given what James Hunt once said about their ability to deal with pressure....

It didn't seem so obvious to the millions of viewers, commentators and pundits, not to mention the ferrari pit crew

You know something that every other person watching didn't?

Seriously? Before the race, you all honestly thought that Hamilton stood a serious chance of losing this title if his car stayed together and the team didn't completely **** up?

Christ, and I get derided as hating Hamilton....I can't fathom y'all out at all.

commentators

Well, not watching the race means that I have no idea what James Allen blathered about all weekend. But I suspect it would have irritated me, so I'm rather glad I missed it.

and pundits

Again - which pundits honestly thought that Hamilton wouldn't win the title at the start of the last race? Because they want sacking if they said he wouldn't, as they obviously have no bloody idea. Once again - provided that his car stayed together, and his team didn't royally screw up, the title was his. And he wasn't about to repeat any of the mistakes he'd made earlier in the year, so it was simply down to the team (who have been in F1 long enough to be halfway decent at it) and the car (which has been pretty bloody good this year).

not to mention the ferrari pit crew

Be fair to them - their boy had just won the race. That probably overwhelmed them a touch.

You know something that every other person watching didn't?

Apparently. Just like I was apparently the only person on this Earth that noticed what Porsche was up to back in March when they announced their plans to increase their ownership in Volkswagen, 'cause all those short sellers somehow missed the bleedin' obvious....

I wasn't expecting him to overtake Glock, as for the lap before the commentators said his 1st and 2nd sectors were fine, and it was difficult to see if the rain had become much heavier on the TV.

It wasn't obvious to many people, I noticed Glock was still on dry tyres but I, like most viewers wasn't watching the last lap sector times while watching the race. Most commentators missed it, the Ferrari guys missed it so I don't think it's fair to say it was obvious, and that made the last lap incredibly exciting and tense.

I have to say... all due respect to the champ... he drove much better in his first season then he did this season.

He was much more consistent last year and didnt score in only 2 races compared to this years 4 races.
Furthermore, he only won 4 races last year. Yet he ended up with more points last year than this year (where he won 5 races).

For the sake of argument assume he did win Spa. His points tally would still be lower compared to last year.

I heard about that too back in March JRS! (Was on a business course in Sweden at the time and it was a topic of discussion that cropped up during one of our breaks!)

You weren't expecting Lewis "The Almighty Messiah™" Hamilton in a McLaren on better tyres to overtake Timo Glock in a frappin' Toyota on the wrong tyres? For pity's sake, Glock lost sixteen seconds on the final lap....

Again....I'm the one who gets it in the neck for apparently hating Hamilton and not recognising his skills. And yet apparently most of the English speaking world (and more than a few from outside it) managed to convince themselves that he wasn't going to zip up to Glock and get by him, and then get overly excited when he did so.

Don't misunderstand me - he drove exactly as he needed to. He secured the title. But he didn't do more. He didn't go out and try for pole, or the win, he didn't even sneak in the fastest lap.

and that made the last lap incredibly exciting and tense.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again - you lot on here are easily pleased. The last two seasons, for all the intrigue and off-track events, have not been vintage F1. And anyone who thinks they have been ought to look at that thread Spie made the other day with the video of Dijon '79 in it. F1 is infintely poorer than it was.

Ah well. They can do what they like with it now. I'm gone.

Oh good, wasn't just me then. Was beginning to worry that I'd dreamt it....

Yes Glock lost a lot of time on the last lap, and it's obvious that would happen if it rained as it was on dry tyres. But no one was certain it would rain enough for his lap to be too badly effected, as I said before Glocks 2nd to last lap wasn't particularly bad, and if he had done the same on the last lap Massa would now be world champion. Yes it's obvious that dry tyres + wet road = poor lap, but when watching the race it's difficult to predict the weather to the closest minute :rolleyes::rolleyes:.

Also I don't see why you are criticising people for enjoying F1 nowadays, is it some sort of elitist thing? Because the thread is about the 2008 Brazilian GP, and therefore the majority of the discussion in the thread is about this particular race, of which me and many others found exciting. I'm sure that there has been better F1 in the past (I've always watched F1 but that's not as long as a lot of people on here) but this race was exciting because of how the WDC swayed so much towards the end, although if it was a normal race in the middle of the season no one would have been bothered if Hamilton came 5th or 6th.

It's easy to say what you are saying with hindsight, but during the race, on the last lap it felt more like 'he had to pass Vettel to win' rather than 'LOL GLOCK WRONG TIRES". When watching this live it was unpredictable, if you think otherwise I'd like to know how you predict rain with to the nearest minute precision.

Infact, Id like to ask the same question to Whitmarsh, since he stated that he was confident Hamilton would pass Glock before the chequered flag. But how would he know that? It didnt chuck it down tillt he last lap and I doubt he knew it would rain on the last lap.

That quote for some reason says JRS, when it's from my post? Odd.

Anyway, he was saying that they were watching both cars on the GPS map, I guess on the last lap they must have seen Glock going so slow and worked out that assuming Hamilton does a normal lap he should pass him, I doubt even Whitmarsh knew before Glocks 1st sector of the last lap though, unless JRS gave him a ring and said how obvious it would be :p ;).

Seriously, you guys will argue about anything!

What are you going to do for 4 months of no F1 threads to bicker in?
I was wondering the same thing. I get bored of reading all the page long replies with 10 quotes breaking other peoples posts apart :(

I don't really see arguing, just discussing of the events and merits of the race. I thought that was the purpose of the thread?
