---2012 Nexus Phone facts/rumours/info thread---

I would be so delighted if the 5 nexus phones rumour from ages ago came through.

I still can't see any sense in them releasing 5 flagship phones.

5 devices? Maybe. A top end phone, a mid range phone, a 10" tablet, a 3G 7" tablet and this rumoured $99 dollar one, perhaps?

^^ Agreed. Five new nexus devices is plausible, but five new Nexus phones isn't going to happen.

Your roundup suggestion seems realistic. The HTC "Nexus 5" would fit the high end phone / "phablet" position nicely. The LG Nexus (and perhaps also the Galaxy Nexus 2?) could fill the mid-range slot(s), leaving two or three spots for tablets. A new high-end 10" tablet to compete with the i-pad would be a sensible option (a Samsung device?), and the "$99" tablet would sit well at the other end of the market.

Anyway, I guess we'll find out soon enough!

I just hope that HTC nexus rumour is true!

I think I could live with the LG nexus despite the awful looks/design of the back (will just have to buy a rock case or something for it :p), but it will definitely need to have 16GB minimum.

So fed up with the crappy update procedure for non-nexus devices now, takes way too long and only guaranteed to get at least 1 update, usually 2 and that is it.

Nexus devices for me from now on!

I should hope so, given your username! :p

I guess it depends how long you intend to keep the phone for. I've had this HTC desire for far too long... in future I'm going to look at changing phones at around 12-month intervals. In that timeframe, a single android upgrade should be plenty to keep a phone up to date, though I agree it can be annoying how long it takes the updates to filter through.

Regarding the Nexus "stock android" advantage: I can certainly see the benefit in most cases, but occasionally the manufacturer builds can be useful as well. For example, with the Note2 I like the idea of the stylus-oriented features, and also the multi-tasking aspects of the TouchWiz build. Yes you need to balance this against the extra bloat, but with a powerful phone and plenty of memory / storage it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

HTC desire...........still!?!

I thought you got a note II?

I also prefer the likes of touchwiz and sense over stock android especially when it comes to the camera. As you pointed out, more feature rich overall and the stock apps like calendar, SMS etc. are better IMO. The only thing I hate about them, is the colour schemes/theme, love the black/blue theme of stock ICS/JB, sense V4 colour scheme isn't too bad, I hate touchwiz's theme/colour scheme though.

But..... I love updates for software way too much :p Especially android updates!

Ideally, I should really just root and flash custom ROMs but I can't stand all the wee niggles that come with it such as battery drain, restarts, memory leaks etc. and plus I would spend far too much time flashing all the tweaks, ROMs :p

it is interesting that you are on a Desire. I am on a GS2 and i think we are in the land of rapidly diminishing returns with phone hardware. Your next phone will be a substantial improvement over a Desire, but 12m later I cant see phones being sufficiently advanced in terms of hardware to make an upgrade useful. In the past the jump from LG Viewty to HTC Hero to a Desire to a GS2 were huge (but incrementally smaller each time) I just dont think it is the case now.

However in terms of phone software, both Apple and Google are pushing hard to implement improved features. I think that is why so many people want a nexus device- the hardware out there is not THAT much better, but access to instantaneous software updates is a HUGE draw.

I really should have got rid of it ages ago. I almost upgraded to a GS2, then the original Note. But I didn't mainly out of laziness and "wait just a little longer"-itis. My contract was up in May, but by then I was dead set on waiting for the Note 2.

I agree about diminishing returns... Phones are "fast enough" for everyday applications, screens are very high fidelity now (720p on a <5" screen is plenty for me I think), and battery life is improving. I think that a lot of the improvements will come from software rather than hardware, which could lend weight to the "Nexus is best" argument.

Still - in the future, if I see a phone which seems like a decent step up, I'm going to grab it. No more hanging onto old tech and waiting for the next big thing!

:D

I did order a Note 2 (LTE version), but it hasn't arrived yet... Due Tuesday next week.

Time will tell I guess.

Still not even confirmed whether it will be a Nexus device. Though the back of the phone (if genuine..) does say Google in the pictures, and I thought only the Nexus devices displayed Google on the back?

SGSI has 'With Google' on the back of it.
I think the 'With Google' means that the phone is of a certain standard and is approved by Google.

They will probably do what they did with the nexus 7, release 8GB and 16GB and then a few months down the line, release 32GB, which will replace the 16GB version and take its price tag too.

I know, it makes no sense whatsoever :p

I don't see this doing well

To average Joe the phone looks same as old nexus. Worse IMO
It's nothing majorly better
Storage and battery aren't good.. 8gb? That's a down grade!

Eh?

The battery is good! :p

Combined with the S4 (most power power efficient chip there is) and a screen, which also might be very power efficient, it should easily last as long as the GS 3, XL/S, if not longer.

Also, just because the phone looks the same doesn't mean that it won't sell i.e. look at the iphones :p :o

Plus I am guessing they will do what they also did with the nexus 7 8GB and 16GB, sell the 8GB at a very low price and charge a fair amount for the 16GB version.

TBF, the phone is a very good upgrade over the GN:

- WAY better CPU/GPU for performance, power efficiency and heat
- 2GB RAM
- higher res. display and supposedly iphone 5 quality
- better battery life
- can't judge camera yet, but I can't see it being worse or just the same as the GN
- possibly better audio

amongst other things

But most of those aren't really an issue for most people. The CPU/ram, unless you're using games Iddon'tsee an issue

And the Iphone crowd would buy a poo if it had iphone 6 on it (some of tgem)

Its just not worth the extra hundreds.

For me it needs
Bigger battery
Bigger storage
Different look
