2012 Weight Loss Thread

Without going to the gym what are the best exercise's for losing weight and general toning up (not building huge muscles). Is Running, Cycling and Swimming enough?

Apart from work (which does involve lots of heavy lifting) the only exercise I've done in the last 3 weeks is a 3 mile run, actually it was more like run till I couldn't then briskly walk till I could run again and repeat! it took me 30mins btw. Does anyone know how many calories I might burn doing this?

What are peoples thoughts on a cross trainer? Just been googling eliptical machines and they seem very popular.

For £80 is this worth it?

I am looking at buying an exercise bike and looking at the argos and tesco sites I can't decide on a brand or model!

I am looking to spend between £100-£150, and looking to use it at least five days a week, so I need something fairly sturdy, but most importantly comfortable. Can someone please either recommend me a bike, brand or particular place to buy from, so that I have some idea of what I am looking for.

In case it matters I am 16 stone and around 5'10".

Thanks.

For £80, I'd buy one of their standard barbell sets and look at complexes. They should help you burn away those calories ;)

Been trying to do some wii fit, health permitting. Apparently I've lost 3lbs this week, but I doubt the wii fit board as scales are accurate, things it comes out with sometimes. Then again it was Burns night last night, and had my fair share, but most of it was steamed veggies.

Don't know if this is the right thread, can anyone spec me some decent bathroom scales for say £15-25 willing to shell out that much instead of buying rubbish ones every few months to a year.

Finding today really hard, my biggest weakness is Lucozade but so far I've resisted the temptation. Just got in from football and was starving so had a omelette, I got half way through and felt sick of eating. Is that my appetite shrinking?

Could be.
I'm finding that it doesnt take long at all before you get used to eating less.
I'v been quite strict with myself this week. Monday + Tuesday were tough, i was very hungry in the evenings. Yesterday wasnt as bad, and today i dont feel the need to eat at all.

So after my depressing midweek weigh in I've managed to shift over 2kg in 3 days. But god it was hard. down to 106.1kg now. 6.5kg down and 11.1kg to go!

Started trying to shift weight at the start of December, we'd had a pretty rubbish 18 months previously with highlights including an earthquake wrecking our house, our new baby being very ill, another earthquake nearly killing my wife's mum, living in a motel for 5 months and then my wife's mum being diagnosed and dying from cancer within 3 months.

We did a lot of comfort eating and not a lot of exercise so my weight ballooned from 78kg to 93kg (I'm 5"10). By the start of January I was down to 90kg and I'm currently at 84kg, aiming to get to 75-78kg and then stick there (I'm 30 by the way).

I've cut out rubbish food that I was snacking on, like pork scratchings or chocolate bars, I have porridge for breakfast (nice stuff), generally a chicken salad or other light lunch and then a normal dinner (but with plenty of veg and healthy food as much as possible). I don't snack after 7pm and during the day I grab an orange rather than crisps.

In terms of exercise I started off doing about 30-40 minutes of light cardio each weekday in the form of cross-training or cycling (either in the gym or on my road bike). I built that up until I was going an hour (with breaks) and now I run 5km on a treadmill and cycle 15-20km. I find I can do that each day without being too tired or sore but it gets a good sweat on.

I feel much better, jeans are fitting nicely and I can even start to feel some abs forming (albeit under a decent layer of fat).

Anyway, was just posting how I was getting on, great thread and for anyone thinking about losing the weight, I can only recommend it. I feel more energetic, happier, am sleeping better, there really aren't any negatives once you get through the first couple of weeks and get some good habits formed.

4th week weigh in for my diet today the scales say.

Old weight 14st 2lbs

new weight 13st 4lbs

4 more lbs to go and I'm having a curry and a beer or two :D

Well I've just completed my first week of attempted weight loss. Made it onto the treadmill 5 times in the last 7 days, and generally kept my calorie intake under the 1500 mark every day. First week always shows the best results, and I'm guessing I dropped a hell of a lot of water weight.

Old Weight: 282.5 pounds.
New Weight: 270.5 pounds.
Weightloss: 12 pounds.

Expecting next week to be a lot tougher, not expecting to see any loss at all , possibly even see a gain, but will keep getting on the treadmill and trying to build my fitness up.

No offence but for 280pounds your maintenance will be around 2800 so dropping to 1500 is beyond ridiculous. I suggest you read on nutrition, and drop no more then 1000 below your maintenance.

EDIT: Especially if your doing cardio everyday that's silly, you could do damage.

Thanks for the concern, I'm actually using the My Fitness Pal application with a goal loss set at 2 pounds a week. It tells me my calorie allowance is 1800 calories per day - I've been coming in under that not through any particular effort to eat less, its simply down to the meals I've been preparing.

I will try and eat closer to the allowance this week, I am not in it to rush this.

Sorry didn't mean to be blunt in my post. Myfitnesspal assumes your losing 2lbs per week so 1800 should be good. Anything lower then that is extreme and considering your not lifting, your body will turn to muscle tissue as a source of energy.
