2013 Haswell Retina MacBook Pro...

are any of you guys using a 4k monitor with you rMBP. I'm looking at getting one for work, i was keen on the apple cinema display, but seems very expensive

Oh yes completely unusable at that resolution

I'm use it at native resolution at least a couple of times a day to give me the added space when its needed, so not completely unusable - admittedly you do need good vision. My default is at 2560 x 1600 when at work and 2048 x 1280 at night when the lights are off :p

Unusable for those without bionic supervision :p

The last two you quoted are very usable though!

Anyone know if all specs are available in store for pick up?

Will be in Birmingham Saturday and wondering if I can pick one up?

All specs are in store, as they are displayed on the site.

So the base, middle and top specs are available, but if you are looking to customise, then you'll have to order online.

E.g like I have gone for the 13" retina 2.6GHz retina, 512GB storage, and 16GB of RAM.

If I had just gone for the standard with 8GB of RAM I would have been able to pick it up from the store that day, but I had to order online, which I did last Sunday, it should be delivered tomorrow.

So you shouldn't have too long to wait. Depends on what you need it for.

When do we reckon they'll refresh the pro? I don't want to order now and find out they release something newer :p

Also apart from the screen, is there much difference between this and the air? I haven't looked at the spec of the air yet.

They refreshed in October last year. So you have at least 6 months before they make any changes. It will probably fall in line with Intel's next line of processors.

If you take that approach, you will never make the purchase, as Apple work on 12 month release cycles with most of their products.

Buy the best version you need for what you want to do.

I felt the best spec for me was the middle spec retina 13", with additional RAM. Don't see the point in having .3 of a GHz more, or 1TB of storage for the prices they are asking.

If I really need extra storage, I have an external hard disk that's plenty, or cloud storage.

Extra processing oomf, I have a quad core desktop PC at home. For out and about, it's more than enough.

The Air will give you longer battery life, and additional lightness. But if you max the spec out of the Air, you essentially have the base model 13" Pro without the retina display.

Thanks mate :) appreciate the reply :)

I'm going to be using it for web surfing, and some photo editing :)

I would go for something cheaper but I love osx.

Do you find 13" too small? Because I think 15" will be too big.

With the retina display, that gives you a good compromise. The higher resolutions give you greater desktop space.

I found the 15" a bit too heavy, and not particularly portable. I will be able to get a better idea when I have had a little time to play with it.

Out for delivery today! :D

13" should be fine for out and about usage and photo editing.

It's essentially what I'm going to be using it for. The odd bit of video editing from GoPro footage, but nothing in-depth. If I were really struggling, I would connect it to an external screen.

Chances are though, if I were doing that, I would be at home, and have access to my PC. So that becomes a non-issue for me.

The 13" to me made more sense, as it's a nice compromise, plenty of power for most tasks, and more portable than the 15".

I'm not going to be doing any gaming on it, so don't need the dedicated graphics power of the 15" beast.

i pretty much had a 13inch in order till they sent me a email to say i have to wait a month so i went off and bought a 15inch instead lol.

Loved it.

i never bought it with me when i went to vietnam for a month (i just came back a week ago) but even if i had a 13 or 11inch laptop, i would not have found the actual time to use it!

it depends where you are traveling and what for? If you are traveling for business then for me, a 15inch is perfectly portable. its light and very thin to carry in a day backpack.

If going on holiday/photo op, the laptop stays home as i like to spend time taking pics rather then spend half the time editing them on a laptop in a hotel.

Thats just me, everyone is different but i myself can happily carry a 15inch all day long with my camera kit inside easily.

It pays to have a good bag :)

Not like teh 15inch weighs 20kg :)

Yes you cant put it in your wife's handbag but why you carrying a laptop around in a handbag hehe

Had a play with both the 13 and 15" today and am totally stuck as to which one to buy :(

There is a top spec 15" with a 1tb ssd on Gumtree for £2k, wonder if its worth a go?

It all depends on what you want it for, me i needed the extra grunt so plumped for the 15 fully loaded. If they made the 13 with a quad and better gfx i would have been all over that.

If you can use the educational discount, saves you a bundle and you get the free 3 year warranty.

I've found that on bootup my mac rarely connects to my network drive (I always get an unable to connect), I just re add the network drive and it's fine but it's kind of annoying. Any ideas why this may be?

Probably because it hasn't connected to the network properly when it starts. Try using an Automator application that waits three seconds or so before mounting the drives, and dropping that into Startup Items.

i have a issue here with osx/chrome. on my 15inch macbook retina, the gpu clearly turns on as i can hear the fan spin everytime i browse the web via chrome.

This is worrying as in safari it is fine but chrome using dedicated gpu just to browse websites such as this?

anyway to set it up so chrome never uses the integrated GPU?

Theres an app called gfxCardStatus which lets you manually pick which gpu to use.

Although I have a 15 inch too. The dgpu is never on in auto mode but I noticed chrome runs hotter compared to safari and firefox when watching netflix and youtube etc.
