2013 Powerlifting Totals

Surely what women prefer is more important? I bet more women would prefer the look of LiE or Ice's body size/shape over a bb'ers goal physique. Most women I speak to think that to big is ugly, and it's surprising how small they consider to big to be :)

Good job most bodybuilders don't do it for woman then

I call BS on anyone here that says there isn't a part of them that doesn't enjoy the added benefits of looking better from going to the gym, or the extra attention they may get because of it. Hell your 1000 times more likely to get complemented on how you look then how you lift, in the real world.

Nah I fully understand it, we are all in it for ourselves first and foremost no matter the discipline. As long as your aware of the impacts your goals may have on the other portions of your life then your not going to be disappoint when you reach your goals :)

So, how come you're not trying to look like the hulk right now ;) :D

Or is that in your best interests? :)

I can't keep it up really, it was also costly and I have no interest in being "massive" any more.

Admittedly I did enjoy it whilst it lasted, but it's hard work to keep up, and I was also at a better gym, and had more time to hit the gym. Now I have less time and less interest in it. Furthermore, I was playing significant amount of rugby, and the bulk was advantageous. Lastly, my health was also more of a concern and I wasn't as fit as I should have been.

Lastly, I also did it to see if I could, I did, I achieved it. I'm now more interested in functional strength, health and being mobile than just a block of muscle.

Don't get me wrong it was fun - but now I train alone, have limited time and motivation, it's never going to happen again. Perhaps once the wedding is done, I may let myself pack on a bit more size again, but frankly, it's nice being able to only eat 2600-3000 cals a day rather than the 4.5-5k I used to!

Call BS all you like - some of us looked good regardless of the gym ;)

Don't get me wrong, a side effect is looking healthier/fitter - and it's great. However, even if I didn't look better, let us just say that if exercise had 0 effect on how we looked, I'd still go to the gym. :)

It's a great side effect, but the least important reason to me. Why else would I train in crappy sweaty rags, and seldom post/take pics. It's not important to some of us - or as important.

For BBers it's vital, and I 100% get that.

I had issues with body image as a young man being rather mature for my age, and hating having hair on my body. Now? I don't give 2 hoots about it - and I just get on with life - we all have our wobbles, especially when younger.

Certainly if you're overweight and unhappy chasing a better looking body is a fantastic target - and there are very understandable reasons behind it.

A sweeping generalisation that everyone, without question, does it for vanity, is not only myopic but also really rather irritating.

I like the compliments I get, yes. I regularly get compliments because of my arms when I go out. Like, when I went out on my dads Christmas party, I swear they'd never seen a guy who lifted before in their lives. I got all kinds of attention

But to me, it doesn't mean much at all. Because I know that anyone who picks up a weight will get those sorts of compliments, as to the average guy on the street with tiny arms and/or overweight, everyone looks big to them and everyone is "massive".

So yes, I like it, anyone would, but it's just something that comes with it. And it's not what I do it for because most people don't know the difference between a nice shaped chest, great seperation in your quads, and a massive thick back, they just see arms and that's all they care about, and as I mentioned earlier, anyone can get compliments on their arms. I'm really doing it because I want the judges to give me compliments in the form of a good score card. And I also don't do it for woman, because like you, I know that most woman claim not to like it, so surely by attempting to be huge and shredded, I'm doing something that will put woman off?

Wow **** got serious all to quick, granted my first post now I've read it back didn't come across as humerously as I intended, so sorry if I offended you both. Let's leave it at that

To be fair, I can amuse myself with anabolic lighting to look almost as big as I want, but I really couldn't give a monkey's... my wife thinks I'm getting fat, and has conditioned my kids to point at "Daddy's fat tummy!" :D

I find the defensiveness of some people when they replied to this rather amusing.
Women or not, a lot of people do it for vanity. Whether it's women's attention or the respect that an imposing stature brings (don't tell me that you look the same at a slouching skinny-fat narrow shouldered person in the same that you look at someone who's got an powerfully athletic build whether that person is your friend, boss, colleague or stranger in the supermarket)

Or that everybody in the gym turns and stares at them when they pull 250kg off the floor.
Of course some people are more vain than others and the proportion between vanity, health benefits and functional strength varies.

But what's so wrong in doing it for the sake of vanity or the women? Sure, it would be better to do it for world peace but at the end of the day you look better, feel more confident and are much healthier as a result of lifting.
That results in "a win" in your relationship with everybody around you without any negative impact on anyone. In fact you're costing the NHS less money as a result of your lifestyle, so everybody should be happy.

I for one had my moments when I thought that lifting is becoming a bit of an obsession but as far as obsessions go, I think I've chosen the best possible way to fill my free time.

Chicks like it boys, dont care what you say both men and women give me a lot more attention than when i was normal sized. Guys more than girls granted because they all want to be alpha like they percieve you to be. Girls on the other hand are thinking of loadsa things and doubting themselves too so many will dismiss you outright anyway either convinced they dont like your type, or feel too insecure to ogle you (its more a man thing anyway right?). But you will get the odd girl just plain stare, now unless you are brad pitt or something which i sure as hell aint, chicks dont stare at you like a carb avoider eyeing up a 12inch pepperoni pizza. Ive even had women 'bump' into me in bars and rather than back away, remain, bumped, much to the dismay and anger of my other half.

Im not saying all or even most woman want a bodybuilder and i sure as hell dont think they want a 20 stone <5% fat one. But as they say, size doesnt matter, but it sure can help.

Everything's an obsession if repeated, especially if the people calling it an obsession do the complete opposite.

I get called 'crazy' or along those lines purely because I go to the gym more than once a week, low and behold it's all the half wits who constantly badger on about wanting to change themselves, they're image or their eating habits.
