Spie, if you don't mind I could create a new thread with a new poll?

Unless you can edit the current poll and remove the existing votes? :)

Ferrari and their fans want V12 everything. They didn't want V4 and only relented to a happier medium of the V6. They just want lots of cylinders and always have. They didn't even want to use turbos in the 80s, but were getting left behind (they won sod-all anyway though).

Strictly speaking, Ferrari were getting left behind because the flat-12 engine they were using didn't allow them to exploit ground-effect aerodynamics. As for your point that I've put in bold there: the 1981 Monaco and Spanish GPs, the 1982 San Marino, Dutch GP and German GPs, the 1983 San Marino, Canadian, German and Dutch GPs, the 1984 Belgian GP, the 1985 Canadian and German GPs, the 1987 Japanese and Australian GPs and the 1988 Italian GP all say hi :p Not that bad for an era that saw some incredible talent massed against them!

So the 232 votes cast here weren't classed as enough, the 700 F1 Fanatic votes weren't enough, but the 98 votes on Planet F1 are "conclusive"?
Please. You know full well that by "conclusive" I was referring to the percentage, not the quantity of voters which I had already said was not big.

Conclusive?
50% don't like them
the other 50% don't mind them.

Yeah, er, that's settled that then.
I think "horrible" was the term used, but yeah fair point, only 50% of the fans saying the new engines sound "horrible" probably is nothing to worry about at all.

Look, I understand some of you are so impressed with the new technology you don't care about the loss of atmosphere caused by the lack of engine noise. But some of us, and not just a few percent, do care.

I respect your point of view. Please respect ours.

Spie, are you going to go to a race this year to see what they're like in person? I was surprised when Bernie said today that he was happier with the sound 'in person'. I'm sure the tight confines of Monaco the spectacle will still be great - especially as the cars are harder to drive.
It would genuinely be interesting to hear your thoughts after you've experienced it in person.

:D

I know they won races, but apart from the post-Prost era which followed, it was probably the most baron period in their history - certainly in championship terms... though give it another half a decade and they'll be equalling it at this rate, though they have at least come close on a few occasions.

Yes of course, but how on earth can you read anything into use such a small vote?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I welcome the lack of noise, as as much as I love the new sounds themselves and the advantages the lack of volume brings elsewhere, I'd love it if they annoyed the locals a bit more - though I doubt you'll find many who wouldn't.

Horrible was the only option given for not liking the engine, with that split into "hate them", "won't watch any more" and " meh, not my cup of too but not too bad" then that 50% would be split differently, obviously. When the only negative option given uses the word horrible it gives people little choice to express their real view.

Personally looking at the 30min youtube vid of onboard action/sound. I find it feels quite, immersive. Not directly comparing but with a video game you get say force feedback to give you a hint when you go slightly off track with one wheel, etc.

With just loud sounds on tv it blocks everything else out. I found that being able to hear when the undertray hits the ground, when tyres go over rumble strips, when they lock up/tyre squealing. It gives you a lot of extra feedback as to what is really going on. One car is running much lower than another. Basically instead of one sound blocking everything out we're getting so much more information via sound and that is great.

If you're used to big engine sounds and that was something you loved about the cars of course you'd be disappointed, but so what. Things change, sometimes for the better, sometimes the worse. Some people like some changes, other people hate them. That is nothing new.

Unfortunately Rosberg cruised to the Aussie victory, they didn't show an awful lot of him which I don't care about but I didn't see many mistakes/car twitches from him. The rest though there were loads of issues, Bottas hitting the wall where I sincerely doubt a car would have the previous year. Ferrari's, TR's, others having trouble in breaking zones.

It felt much closer to real racing for me, though I think that will only improve as they get a little less worried about reliability.

What if you hate the new engine sound, but don't think its the massive disaster others do?

You have created a binary viewpoint and therefore stuck everyone in one of only 2 buckets, "hate the noise and think it's a disaster", and "like the noise and don't care".

What about those who hate the noise but also don't really care?

And do you not think its a bit cheeky to ask people to respect your opinion considering you walked into this thread and almost immediately told Greboth that he was "entitled to his opinion, but wrong"? Its a 2 way street.

Apparently they are going to try and fiddle with the noise for the TV viewers. Makes sense, it does need to be louder. Couldn't hear anything in practice today..

I'm sure that could be pretty easy to do, where the car sound feed into the main amp, just turn up that feed. I presume..

I'm surprised 39% of this forum like the sound of this years engines.

It sounds okay when there's one car on track and no commentator or other cars... but as soon as there's a full grid and people speaking over them they just sound pathetically silent

I got that, onboard with bottas in particular all the detail in the noise made it feel more immersive. Sadly that video has been taken down!.
