2016/17 Pre-season Friendly Thread

You can already see that Mourinho has given the players more freedom to take chances. We have already played 10 passes this half you just wouldn't have seen last year. Highlights just how much LvG demanded possession and low risk passing.
 
Lovely stuff from Mata. I really think that putting him in the no10 role instead of Rooney would pay dividends. We already look 10x better without him on the pitch.

If Rooney doesnt play at No 10 then Pogba (or Miki) should go there before Mata, complete waste of space

(actually at least 4 out of the 5 tonight have been scored by players well past their best)

Rooney really shouldn't be anywhere near the first XI. Like last season, he was killing so much of our play with his poor control and passing as well as his complete absence of pace .

I think against most teams we wouldn't need the defensive addition. Carrick has been awesome this half. I know he has had a lot more time than he might usually get but he has been super positive with his passing and his passing really is spot on.

I think maybe some people forgot that A, Utd weren't 'freely playing different passes' in the first half, that Galatasaray aren't good, that they've made significantly less changes than Utd and that the second half just looks like a ultra tired defence doing almost nothing for them though tired team all over vs fresh young legs.

This is the kind of game Mata excels in, second half with fresh legs against a shattered defence full of holes. Mourinho's effect was non existent in the first half and the biggest effect on the second is a significantly less tired team.

What UTd always seem to lack is balance, you need some guys running fast and other guys to make the pretty passes. If you've got Ibra upfront you want a lot of pace behind him and quick support and attacks from central mid, which they lacked. With Rashford, Linford and Young on you suddenly had the speed required then Mata to pick out the passes.

They should start either with a 4-4-2, drop Rooney, get Rashford running off Ibra as they'd likely work very well together with Micky/Martial out wide, or Ibra with a 4-5-1, again drop Rooney, get Micky in the middle and get Rashford down the wing for the pace and support required along with Martial, better movement and passing from the middle so Rashford/Martial can come inside, pass to Micky then make the run in behind and get the ball back from him in a position to score. None of that works with Rooney, cut inside, pass to Rooney make the run and Rooney either screws up the attempt or straight passes backwards instead.
 
good stuff from us tonight. Mata I thought played well when he came on. Real live wire and he sometimes picks the most beautiful passes out. First half I thought we sat a little deep but hey it's pre season so as long as they are getting game time and no injuries, good stuff from Utd tonight
