2017 Chilli Growing - feel the burn!

I have 2 x https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01FNVYSYY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

1 x https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01B1MGRR0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 for seedlings

1 x https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01CHO6IO8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 for larger plants

I started with 1 x light and the lovely small tent and got the rest later when I realised the plants were going bonkers and needed more room. I also have a clip on fan but now I just leave a zip slightly open to stop condensation due to the fan being horrendously loud.

I also only pot on to 8" pots, I find that size the best compromise between space and plant size, one thing I can't state enough is use chilli focus, it makes the world of difference.

I will get some close ups later of just how much fruit there is on each plant, it's a big yield.

Wow them lights are expensive! I think I paid about £20 for my cfl grow light and it seemed to work pretty well.

check the npk on it, then buy something you can make from powder at probably 10% of the price, same results.. just make it up, then dose the same.. wow same thing exactly.. funny thing last few weeks about humans and multivitamins, if you are already eating a healthy balanced diet, you are making expensive urine.. food for thought.

I germinated 5 Carolina Reapers at the end of January along with a handfull of Habaneros.

Not sure what i will do with any reapers i grow.

can I ask? There's a lot of chat about chilies, not much about the equipment needed can grow other things.. but I am interested as I'd like to grow a quick crop like salad etc, typically 2-3 weeks, cut-and-come-again etc.. interested to know the setups, I know some have grow tents etc, keen to know, got 2 kids, and organic lettuce is 3 times the price..

Ive got 20 plants now propogated and growing nicely, including Jalapenos, Habaneros, Scotch Bonnets and Trinidad Scorpions and a few others. Funnily enough, my Trinidads are growing the best - so i'm in the same boat as you Iamzod, ihni what i'm going to do with carrier bag loads of 1.2M scoville chillies! Make sauces?

Anyone used these guys for chilli plugs? Or alternatively know anywhere better? Looking at getting a few cayenne seedlings as I totally forgot to start some seeds off this year. Or would I be better off buying a small plant with it being april?

I was in Wilco yesterday and they had some of those on shelf - £2 or £2.50 for 4 or 6 in blister pack -not sure now-They looked good health plants as well -- was tempted but got three pot pack with three different chilli seeds

Ok this year was a cheat..
2x Bhut Jolikias (one outside of pic)
1x Trinidad Scorpion
1x Mild version of the Trinidad Scorpion (I assume a hybrid)

NOOOOOO !!!
I've been growing chillies on and off for about 6 or 7 years, but this is the first year I have got APHIDS :(:(:(

Does anyone have any secret recipies for killing these asshats?
I did some googling and have made a concoction of water, washing up liquid and a teaspoon of spicy chilli sauce (really hits the back of the throat when you're spraying it).
But maybe I'm expecting too much, it doesn't seem to be killing the aphids, they still seem to be there and walking about after the plant has dried. Perhaps it's more of a long term solution than an instant fix?

Any advice or such would be nice.

BTW, growing....
Fatalii
Antilais Habaneiro
Jigsaw Fatalii
Jalapeno
Trinidad Scorpion

:)

I cant vouch for this so use it at your peril
At the allotment some talk about tin foil on the ground under your plant as they aphids dont like the bright light
I would also knock off as many as you can repeatedly.
This is the sweet time for aphids as most of their predators are not yet about in numbers.

I had aphids last year and used the technique I described in the thread last year (below), it sounds like a bit of work but actually it doesn't take long and is rather satisfying.

I had a load of aphids on my scotch bonnet, so yesterday I set about my usual treatment technique...

Simply get some brown parcel tape (or normal sellotape) cut a 3 inch length, roll it across the width sticky side out. I then take this and gently touch any areas when there are pesky aphids. The aphids stick to the tape and simply lift off. repeat as necessary.

It might seem like it would take a long time but in actual fact it only takes a few minutes so unless you have a large number of plants it's a really quick and simple process. I must have taken over 100 aphids off my plant yesterday and it only took about 10 minutes or so and it's now aphid free again.

Well, I had a bit more of a google about the squirty method, and apparently it does take time for the soap to break down the aphids/eggs waxy skin and allow dehydration and death, but I guess it also wouldn't hurt to go over every plant I have (probably about 18) and sticky tape them too before a fresh squirting :)

Hi.

Looking for some advice ref 'Pinching out' ones plants to encourage a bushier and stronger plant. From watching several Youtube videos, it seems that the practice is to wait until the plants main stem has split into a Y and then to snip the two stems of each side of the split. Is this correct? Should further pinching out be done in other areas of the plant or is this one action all that is required?

Thanks!

Bhuts and Scorpion have been loving the hot sun in the conservatory and I mean loving it. They're in large pots so have lots of moisture to tap into.

I'm really scared that I'm gonna lose all my chilies this year :(
No matter how much of a thorough soaking in soapy chilli water I give my plants, I come back 2 days later and am pretty much guaranteed to find a couple of Aphids hanging around.

All the new leaves are bobbled and deformed.

Still..... guess I'll just keep soaking them and try to do my best to keep them alive and hope that eventually the aphids **** off !!!

Are they indoors?
If so get them outside asap when you can be about, some of the predators for aphids are about now so if one happens across them then your eat all you can buffet switches to Aphid away from chilli plant

Keep an eye our for ladybirds, they are easy to catch and transfer, lacewing and parasitic wasps far less so

Also keep an eye out for ants. They often relocate aphids to create themselves a food source. So if you have ants nearby you need to deal with them as well

Whilst Aphids impact the plants general condition they are unlikely to kill it completely just reduce its growth and production.
