Except more jobs will be replaced by machines that don't pay tax hence we don't need an abundance of unskilled workers, we'll have enough of our own.

OOOooofffff, prepare yourself for some heat mate!

I said the same thing on here years ago, still having the nightmares

The general thinking back then was there was no way in hell machines would ever replace peoples jobs

Personally I would like to see:

Increase tax free limit to 20k for all
Increase 20% rate to 60k
40% for everything else.
National insurance at 12% for all i.e get rid of the 2% band.
Dividend rates the same as income tax.
Corporation tax bands at 20% and 40% based on group profitability.

I imagine it would be close to break even.
If I understand the bottom two correctly then, they will kill investments in this country faster that Kwasi did. I like the rest though.

And yet we see more supermarkets going almost entirely self service checkouts or none at all with the technology Amazon introduced. Next will be haulage and taxis.

I said that, yet the response was that you'd still need the same number of human workers as before

Economies of scale was disregarded

It's not like robots will be in factories and at computers working.

Company I work with, everytime they invest in machinery it does a lot more automatically, without human intervention.

You end up only needing 1-2 workers to run it instead of 5-6.

They've upgraded two machines like this so far, so that's 3-4 workers instead of 10-12.

Though the initial investment is high, eventually that's quite a decent saving per year.

Low skill jobs will naturally fall away as time goes on. It's happened all through time. Where money can be saved by automation it will be automated.

I support progress to lower the world population. But with our economic model its a disaster for those left.

But we need to figure out a way where we do not need a ever increasing population.

Not in the areas that can be done by machine, you might have one person supervising about 6 - 10 checkouts. They're also producing robots that patrol shops and scan for gaps on the shelves so even the shelf stackers will be reduced in time. They're not all going to be replaced by software developers. It's always an aggregation hence why companies invest in it in the first place as they can see a return on their investment vs hiring people.

Well it seemed obvious to me at the time.

No they wont, machines lack creativity to a point.... Cant see people getting off to the only fans machine version.... Phoarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr look at the actuator on that baby. (actually being a engineer that has turned me on already) :) :)

You say that. Just give it time.
Sex bots (decent ones) aren't far away! And if they do the clothes washing.. Sold! :D

When a hot sex bot costs less than a divorce.. That's the tipping point!

How creative is the human checkout assistant, you're lucky in most cases to get a smile and greeting from them and are you prepared to pay more for it?

Many low skilled workers today could be replaced by automation but currently its cheaper to employ people on the minimum wage rather than invest in the technology to replace them. As the automation technology gets cheaper over time than those employers may reassess but its those in the middle ground of income that should be concerned by being replaced. They earn enough to make automating their roles a worthwhile investment and a lot of office based roles don't need expensive robotics to replicate a physical role.

Look up vtubers. Yes there's a human behind there, but the sort of interactions required to perform such a function are either already doable by AI or very nearly.

Isn't Amazon's warehouses mainly 2 - 4 people, keeping an eye on any machine failures?
