If I liked paying taxes I'd have a proper car instead of some compromised PHEV to avoid BIK :p

Equally though I can't get on board with people who run an EV purely because it's cheap to do so (not knocking that, it's a bloody good reason!) getting all Bono about how they are being punished for saving the planet now they have to pay 52p a day in road tax.

It was inevitable that would end up being the case. Anyone who claims to be taken by surprise with it went in with their blinkers firmly in place.

here here ... how many miles are you doing though twas doing less than 4K in my 220g/m bm

evasy solution as adopted in NZ and govt studies / previous threads is tax per mile then everyones happy : govt coffers+ev/ice owners;
w/ default allowance and manual recording at MOT/electronically.
All the additional revenue from home fueling revenue could help repair the pot holes, Starmer 'promise' only yesterday on their funding, should reduce insurance too.

Like I said, I have no issues with them putting it on new EVs. It's the retrospective application to vehicles which have always been exempt that feels very dishonest - as far as I'm aware they've never done that before?

I assume most ICE drivers would be pretty ****** off too if their 7 year old car was suddenly liable for an increase in VED several multiples of their fuel cost?

Yea, so ****** off they probably just wouldn't pay it and chance it.
 
Looks like mine (2 lt diesel) is staying at £35 the wife's (2 lt petrol) remains free.
I'm going to hold onto my car for dear life as long as possible it's a 2016 plate Euro6.
 
If I just drove locally I would probably get away with it, no cameras and hardly ever see police. I'm sure lots of people do.

A relative forgot to renew it once and it took over a year for her to get noticed. £100 fine, less than half the price of the tax...

I'm sure they would and it's understandable that EV drivers are annoyed. That still doesn't make the attitude of some that a person in a £20 VED diesel should now be paying over £200 'because I'm doing my bit for net zero and they aren't' any less nonsensical when you consider the average demographics that own the vehicles in question.

Your last part about fuel costs highlights why EV drivers are in cloud Cuckoo land if they didn't think their 3 p/mile running costs were anything more than a temporary blip in the order of things. No VED and no fuel duty... The government were never going to let that gravy train run for too long!

Yeah I think you're right. When it was 0 any percent increase was also obviously zero. My mum's old fiesta is 0 since 2017.

But then nobody in their right mind would pay an extra £10k for the inconvenience of running an EV if the running costs weren't so much lower than the equivalent ICE.

The price gap is now narrowing (although the depreciation is still quite a bit higher), and it is getting less inconvenient, but if my running costs ended up the same as the equivalent ICE, I'd ditch the EV tomorrow, as I'm sure most people would (although if my electricity prices increased by 1000% then I'd have significantly bigger problems than deciding what car to buy! :cry: )

Nobody is doing that anyway. Currently people are getting them as a tax dodge or because they are a depreciation disaster which they scoop up second hand.

I'm sure ICE running costs will start creeping up to keep costs favourable in the EV camp, even if the current ppm figures are unsustainable.

Where did I say it wasn't allowed? I was just answering the point about people spending more for an EV over an ICE car.

But to answer your question... I'd like people to buy whatever they want for whatever reason is important to them.

Ultimately the question of why would people spend £10k more than the equivalent ICE is a self answering one. That price inequality won't be there come a few years time (or less) because manufacturers simply won't be allowed to shift ICE vehicles in any great volume so the prices will have to go up.
