20mph residential speed limit (replacing 30mph)

Talking to some colleagues last week who are located all around the country and several of them said unprompted that they'd just avoid day trips into Wales now if everything's 20..

So yeah that's just what we need, to put off people from the biggest industry in Wales .

Well me and my Mrs used to visit Wales a lot, now we won't be a real shame but we have Peak and Lake district on our door step and UK coastline, we will just go there instead or venture in Scotland for weekends. So yeah Welsh government making great decisions, as always idiots.

Its funny an old car like my Corvette which has all pointy ends, no pedestrian safety systems and not the best brakes, but 30mph was fine for that car. Cars are far safer now and far more capable of stopping far quicker even if the dumb ass human behind the wheel is not paying attention but speed limits decreasing, total stupidity.

For the short term Wales is off our list of places to visit.

I was in north Wales this weekend. Went through a few 20mph parts, they were short and didn’t really affect the journey. Most villages were still 30mins though.

I actually think driving super rurally it'll be OK.
Its when you're in the suburbs that it gets annoying. As there are but long stretches of 30.

Driving into town for me is mostly 30 and it adds a good chunk of time. But driving out rurally isn't so bad.

They should have actually enforced the 30mph limit first imo.
Which is what England should do rather than **** about.

This is a good way to enforce 30, call it 20 and drivers will slow down.

You must be angry, you can only write about how bad it is.

Do you keep writing 30 when you mean 20 :p

For someone that lives and works in wales, its a bloody nightmare that's been poorly implemented.

The phrase a **** up in brewery comes to mind.

My village has the new 20 mph signs, but the repeaters and road marking all say 30. And of course there was a speed camera van at the bottom of the steepest hill the Monday after the switch, never seen one before.

Cant wait for the first lot of prosecutions to come through, what speed are you supposed to do? the entry signs which you can miss if you come off a side street say 20 but all the roundals say 30....

Best bit is they've lowered a load of dual carriageways to 50mph secretly. The dual carriageway between abergavveny and raglan is now 50mph down from 70mph. You can now go faster on the old ross road with all its bends than the perfectly save dual carriageway.

Dickford is gonna get bent over at the next election.

Its a massive win for the tories in labour.
At least there isn't a GE coming soon. Because that would be terrible timing..

Wait..

The A40 to Raglan was a popular drag strip for the lads when I was growing up I’ve been down there well north of 70 many times.

I suspect the 20mph limit will come to us all already in discussion in Scotland and only a matter of time in England after that. So for once the Welsh government is ahead of the curve!

Kind of pleased my driving days are nearly done. I had all the camera free, relatively traffic free roads and motorways where cruising was often north of ninety. I'll stick to the pushbike now mainly.
:D

Dont worry, the government is hinting at reg plates, insurance and speed limits for cycles eventually:D

If less people can afford to drive and ditch cars, they need to keep milking the public somehow.

Undoubtedly all vehicles will be taxed however powered but I think that pedalled bicycles will be last on the list. Think of the children. :D

Now it's 30 in Wales I'm expecting Scotland and England to follow suit "to being us in line with the rest of the UK" (yes I'm aware NI is the UK but that's across the pond).

Sad times :(

Was trying to find data for fuel consumption and emissions for buses vs speed and interestingly get a lot of hits from the likes of 20 is plenty claiming no net negative, etc. but all the actual data shows a convex polynomial relationship with the best results between 30 and 50 with often a steep increase outside of that, some buses seem optimised gearing wise for significantly better economy at 30MPH and ~52MPH (not sure why 52) with worse economy between those points as well as either side.

The only actual advantage seems to be reduced tyre and brake particles, which are a significant health hazard, if at 20 traffic flows smoother with less hard braking than 30 though real life conditions tend to vary.

It’s not going to be higher in any case. You’ll get your best MPG in your highest gear, dropping to 20 probably means dropping a cog for the most part.

A fully electric bus would probably get slightly better efficiency.

They really didn't think it all through. They just listened to the loud "safety" mob and overlooking things like above
