20mph residential speed limit (replacing 30mph)

I see Sunak is going full populist this morning and proposing to ban councils from imposing 20mph on ‘main roads’ in England which isn’t actually happening.

Got to earn those votes somehow, extremely typical of the tories to do it via scare mongering of something which is not occurring...

The vast majority of those roads should be 20mph, they are predominantly tight residential streets with parked cars on either side and no segregated cycling infrastructure. They are not usually through roads.

Even if the limit was 30, it’s questionable whether you should be doing that speed. The speed limit on my housing estate is 30, your an utter lunatic going above 20.

Which is why I said the vast majority ;)

The default choice shouldn’t be to reduce the speed limit to improve safety, particularly on main roads. Layout and things like railings are huge factors. The problem is councils don’t have any money and whacking up a 20mph sign is basically free compared to the alternative.

Seems like the same people arguing for 20mph zones are the same ones shouting about pollution causing more deaths. Well they'll be more pollution from cars cruising at 20mph. They can't have it both ways.

It's a bit like moronic "stop oil" mob protesting in NEOPRENE wetsuits by the coast the other day... Protesting against oil while litterly wearing an oil based product to keep warm doesn't get more ironic.

Maybe "the left" isn't full of idiots in this country, but they are making it look that way.

but neoprene and car tyres are a legitimate use of oil ? do need to use renewables to process them though like the hydrogen shell will use in their refineries;
can't lay my hands on article, but I think it was kia who are even using ABS style plastics on structural crash structures of cars ..... maybe the whole chassis soon ?

update from mayor on 20mph https://content.tfl.gov.uk/tfl-mts-update-14-july-2022-acc.pdf
Safe speedsLowering the speed of vehicles in Londonis key to reducing both the likelihood ofa collision occurring and the severity ofthe outcome. By working with London’sboroughs, nearly half of London’s roadsnow have a 20mph speed limit. To date, we have introduced a 20mphspeed limit on 100km of the TLRN, and19 of the 33 London boroughs (includingthe City of London) have committed to a20mph default limit. In 2021/22, we reducedthe speed limit on more than 30km ofthe TLRN, including a new 20mph speedlimit on A3220 Battersea Bridge and A3212Chelsea Embankment. There is a further17km in detailed design, and the programmeis set up to continue in 2022, subject tofunding. We aim to accelerate the deliveryof our 20mph speed limit programme sothat by 2024, 220km of the TLRN will be a20mph zone.To ensure compliance, in 2021/22 weretrofitted 360 of our car and van fleet withmandatory Intelligent Speed Assistancesystems. We are closely monitoring theperformance of these units and willshare results with Government as part ofcase-making for improved vehicle safetyregulation in the UK.

hope that includes his bullet proof car

Neoprene can't be recycled though and it doesn't decay. It's made to resist salt water so pretty much nothing will kill it.

I don't think ABS is all that nice. If you listen to health and safety when 3D printing it, you should wear a gas mask or evacuate the house because the fumes are a strong carsonagenic.

And yet people go 40+ down these roads without a care about the dangers and annoyance they cause to those residents. This is why I'd like to see LTNs installed across resident only streets.

After driving at 20mph through caerphilly due to boring law-abiding people, got to the mountain road where it increases to 40.

Imagine my rage as I got stuck behind a funeral cortege which did about 10mph all the way to Thornhill cemetary- around 3 miles.

Keir Starmer could just say, of course we too will ensure 20mph zones are only used where safety data shows they should be ... swallow some humble pie.

Why not make it 5mph then nobody gets hurt. Be like walking or going by barge. Back to the 18th century.

Just ban cars tbh. That's what the anti car lobby really want.

They want to ban buses as well it looks like. How will buses use a single lane in a tunnel unless they only ever go in one direction?

The irony as walking and cyclist is banned from the Silvertown Tunnel due to safety reasons.

But that is because there is a hop on hop off bus service. Sounds sensible doesn't it.

There is also the Greenwich tunnel specifically for pedestrians and bikes. They can also take the DLR a single stop or the cable car a single stop.

Vehicles currently only have one option.
