20mph residential speed limit (replacing 30mph)

People ‘bombing down’ what were 30mph roads at 40mph is precisely the reason why the limit is now 20mph.

So yes if you continue to ignore the limit, it will be 10mph <slow clap>.

Well it certainly isn't helping to make a case against the implementation of these limits but I have my doubts as to what is precisely behind them.

and this is why we can't have nice things, people like you want to break the speed limit.

If it's early morning and the road is absolutely empty, why can't you go a bit faster? It's not inconveniencing anyone or adding any danger?

Nobody is saying go 60 in a 30, but 40 is hardly different.

Lots of goody two shoes in this thread I think that jump when told to.

If the road is "absolutely empty", just overtake them, no harm done and carry on at the 40mph you'd rather do. Strange complaint.

Of course I do, but because I'm a safe driver I wait for a long straight stretch of road to overtake sometimes that means you're stuck behind the slow coach for a little while.

It's the same people that stop to literally 0mph before turning left or right, or that spend 10 seconds going from 0 to 5mph when the light goes green. You can see the cog wheels turning as they figure out how to move their hands and feet. And as a result traffic gets ever worse and worse.

Alas we'll all have self driving cars one day and it won't be an issue anymore. Thank goodness.

Edit: I also notice all the people criticising me are posting from slow pace of living and thinking Yorkshire, Wales, Nottingham, etc. come and live in Sadiq Khan's 20mph London and then we'll talk .

You don't need a particularly long straight stretch of road to overtake someone doing 20mph if you're prepared to be doing 40mph.

It's such an unbelievably minor inconvenience, to the point it barely even registers as an inconvenience, no idea how this can become "the most frustrating thing ever" as you put it (unless the roads aren't actually all that empty or suitable to be 'bombing' down at 40mph I suppose).

Because you overtake the one old biddy doing 20 and then a few minutes later get stuck behind the next one :p

Starting to sound like quite a few cars on this "absolutely empty" road ;)

There's too many people in London, what can I say.

My 30 min commute nowadays was down to 12 mins during COVID. Just cruising down empty roads with no blockers. It was the most glorious and beautiful time in that sense at least.

Which brings me back to the point of the thread. Speed limits should be entirely abolished below 40-50 mph. 20mph are just a nonsense.

This just doesn’t compute, they can’t both be the same.

Given it’s London there are likely to be cyclists, pedestrians and other hazards every 15 seconds.

In essence you are part of the issue.

You're all joking about it, but it might happen.

Perhaps the government and the local authority should do more to encourage the take up of electric vehicles and this wouldn’t be a problem. ;)

There is ultimately a base level of emissions from ICE traffic that you aren’t going to get below.

Definitely. They don't incentives though they discourage diesels and petrol. So I'm left hanging onto my current car as long as possible because a new electric vehicle just doesn't add up for me.
I'd have solar but id be dead before I recover the costs.

I avoid town, often faster to use the M60 to get anywhere around here.

Have you really thought that comment through?
What you’re suggesting is that it would be OK to break the speed limit when YOU feel it’s safe.
Can you imagine how that would play out if this was applied by all the Entitled in their Audis and Range Rovers? The roads would be more like a war zone.

Natural selection.
I think speed limits should be abolished entirely except for maybe school roads.
70mph on the motorway? Joke.

Edit: Mostly hyperbole/tongue in cheek, since it needs a disclaimer clearly.

Natural selection would apply to the moron behind the wheel, its not natural selection if your dangerous driving kills other people.
