20mph residential speed limit (replacing 30mph)

…until a member of YOUR family gets hurt/killed by some numpty doing 50 through a residential road.
By that logic we should make cars illegal and all walk everywhere. Or ride bicycles.

Create safe pedestrian pathways and crossings, and let people drive properly. Someone will still get killed by a car going at 20mph somewhere, and then we're down to 10mph. Might as well walk to places then as it'd be faster.

Definitely. They don't incentives though they discourage diesels and petrol. So I'm left hanging onto my current car as long as possible because a new electric vehicle just doesn't add up for me.
I'd have solar but id be dead before I recover the costs.

I avoid town, often faster to use the M60 to get anywhere around here.
Who said anything about new?

There are many used electric cars which are cheaper than their used ICE equivalents.

That’s not to say you need to rush out and buy one tomorrow but in reality there are people who are perfect customers for buying an EV over an ICE today but they don’t because of ill conceived perceptions.

People have become prettified of them because of the Tory media, anti ‘green’ government messaging around them and their general mismanagement of the transition.

You should hear some of the absolutely barmy questions I get about mine and those thoughts only come from them being funnelled FUD by the U.K. rags.

I look often I can't find an equivalent to my Mondeo for the same money.

No doubt when I come to change their probably will be. It's a 16 plate still feels brand new so it'll be a while yet.

Got my fingers crossed on the Mazda 6 hopefully getting the single rotor engine powered electric.

Natural selection.
I think speed limits should be abolished entirely except for maybe school roads.
70mph on the motorway? Joke.

Perhaps you'd change your mind if you worked with the Emergency Services and had to pick up the results of drivers with your attitude.
Mind you perhaps not when you're using the phrase Natural Selection.

Given that drivers frequently crash their cars onto/across pavements and into houses or shops, where do you propose creating these safe pedestrian areas?

A typical “I’m entitled” response.
Come on, apply a modicum of thought to this.
In theory, we shouldn’t need any traffic laws, if everyone would drive in a polite and safe manner.
Both you and I know there are those who are stupidly competitive, think that being overtaken is an effrontery to their manhood, have far more confidence than ability, or are just plain lemmings.

It’s simply NOT viable to have rules that are variable to suit conditions (weather, vehicle state, traffic) and driving ability.

As such, the only way to avoid chaos on our roads is to drive within the current rules and encourage others to do so.

I'm a doctor with a subspecialty in major trauma. I deal with catastrophic RTAs on a regular basis. 20mph zones won't affect my workload substantially. Next, thanks.

Touting for more work?

You said speed limits should be abolished entirely and you reckon you are dealing with major trauma every day where motorists have caused death and destruction through speeding.
This is the first time I've said this on this forum - I don't believe you or there's something wrong with you.
Mind you it keeps you in a job I suppose.

My 30 min commute nowadays was down to 12 mins during COVID. Just cruising down empty roads with no blockers. It was the most glorious and beautiful time in that sense at least.

I thought the same on my pushbike going to the shops.

No cars cutting me up.

No diesel or petrol stink.

Sounds of wildlife in the hedges and trees.

Then they found a cure. ;) :p

Exactly the same for me commuting to the hospital, so peaceful, no smell and no cars trying to maim me except for a Major Trauma Clinician.

This is a thread about 20mph zones, which while tangentially related, shouldn't be derailed into a discussion about why cyclists are menaces and shouldn't be on the roads.

You turned it into a 'Speed limits should be abolished entirely except for maybe school roads' thread talking about how stupid 20mph zones are :)
At this point I'm convinced you definitely aren't a Major Trauma Clinician.

Being fair, i don’t believe that more 20mph limits will make a lot of difference to our current road safety.
After all, the numpties who drove like pratts in 30 zones are unlikely to have “seen the light” just because of a lowered limit.
The issue is IMO MUCH more about driver attitudes and how they approach the activity. It’s not a race, using sensible breaking limits is a good thing along with basic politeness to other road users. Unfortunately we have little way of controlling/influencing others, apart from asking nicely and trying to lead by example
