***21.9 Ultrawide Thread***

Hopefully we'll see some new monitors based on the new high refresh rate SVA panels at IFA. Maybe if we're really lucky we'll get some Sharp VA panels with QD filters.

Guess we won't see any OLED monitors until '17 at the earliest. LG are still milking IPS, big TVs have a much bigger margin and a larger market than high end consumer monitors, Samsung aren't re-entering big panel (bigger than mobile) OLEDs until '17 and AUO are absolutely nowhere near producing big OLED panels.

OLEDs aside I guess we won't get any of the really hot stuff until AI and later Pascal launch ... no 4K/144hz or 3440x1440/144hz until DP1.3 / SuperMHL.

The Samsung is the best of the bunch from all the ones iv tried anyway as its the one I stuck with. The IPS ones all had bleed + other issues for me and I feel that the Predator will have the same bleed issues too as its the same panel.
Give me a 144hz OLED panel please :D

From what I've read Stateside the Freesync version does :(

What do we think is currently the next step in UW? 39/40"?

Definitely not. 34-35" is already really pushing it for the desktop environment. Also, unlike the 4K 40" monitor niche (occupied by the Phillips), there aren't going to be any ultrawide 40" TV panels to use.

Trend will be higher refresh rates, and everything being curved soon. Hopefully lower latency on VA and less terrible bleed / glow on the IPS ones. Also I'd guess we might see quite a few 5K units next year.

5k seems like a terrible idea. 4k is already PLEEEEEEEENTY of pixels to push.. Maybe 5040x2160 should be the next step (ultrawide 2160p)... though that's still a huge amount of pixels - but I'd definitely buy one in a heartbeat :D

i want to get that dell and am coming from 3011 as well:)
will wait for opinions :)

So far, in less than an hours use - OH MY GOD! This monitor is outstanding, it looks tiny vertically in comparison to the behemoth that is the 3011. The curve is noticable in the best way possible.

This single monitor is replacing the u3011 and the Samsung 1440p monitor, it's absolutely gorgeous - now the question is can I afford two more for pure bliss?

This is an ultrawide thread in which i was replying to a question about what was next for ultrawides. Besides, I think 5120x2160 will end up being more common than 5120x2880, ultimately. Anyway, even 16:9 5K at high refresh rates should be easily within the reach of next year's top end GPUs. They'll have nearly 20bn transistors.

Glad you like it, and I'm glad I'm not the only one that had the exact same reaction.

I want to slap the ~5 people that told me the U3415W would be a mistake because "the curve is just a gimmick", I could not imagine using this size screen without the curve, it's perfect. I finally understand what LTT was raving about with the 34UC97.

I actually like having just a single monitor, it looks a lot more clean. My new desk combination is going to be ~2.4m metres from end to end so maybe it will look a bit bare with just one of these. Three as a surround setup would be beautiful, but I'd imagine you need SLI Titans (VRAM, mainly) for it... Needless to say, I would absolutely adore that setup, but it's not happening with my lonesome 980Ti any time soon.

... Glad you enjoy it :p

I was considering 3xXR3501's Joe, just for the fact that it would be pretty incredible!! Plus my current cards would handle the res no problem

Then I woke up and realised it would be 2k on a whim :D

If only I could see such a setup in the flesh...

I don't know how well a 980Ti SLI setup would handle that resolution actually, I think in some games you would hit a VRAM issue, but maybe not for the majority... Not yet, at least.

Acer had a 3x X34 setup at CES this year, it's absolutely jawdropping.

The only thing that ruins it for me is the stretched camera, which is unfortunate really.

It would be an epic experience on a game that doesn't stretch the outside edges.

Thanks for that Joe, appreciate it. It's actually swayed me more to a single large panel (like I have) tbh. That setup looks like it would just be much too much!!! I guess you can have too much of a good thing :D

Cheers again

If you want to look more into it, you can try Linus' video here:

It looks like it'd be fun for a day or two, but after a week you'd be wondering why you spent £2k on it :p - I love the clean look of my desk with a single monitor, and aside from not being able to glance at Teamspeak whilst in a game, it's perfect for me. It seems I'm not the only person :D

8 FEET of screen

edit - Treated myself to an Ergotron MX Arm instead for the Phillips. A great degree of adjustment might be just the ticket!!

I've got the ergotron, all I would say is that I think the Dell might be a bit too heavy for it, it doesn't raise as much without falling slowly back down due to the weight.

3x screens at this price is unfortunately unrealistic anyways, I don't play many games so that wouldn't be a problem for me. The entire point of this was to replace a multi-montior setup which was aging, hot and two different resolutions and aspect ratios.
