***21.9 Ultrawide Thread***

Considering that i can read 90% of text on a 24 inch 4k panel sitting over 60cm away with no issues i dont think my request is that bad. There are some of us who want higher DPI monitors but are not interested in the monstrosities of 34inch however awesome it might look on your desk. I loss focus if the monitor is to big and it sometimes leads to eye fatique and headaches. If i didnt hate 16:9 so much i would have gotten a 24inch 4k myself i just prefer ultrawide.

Some perhaps, but not enough for anyone to actually make one for the half dozen people who'd buy it lol! The big money is in the big monitors it would seem.

Problem is we dont really know do we? we can guess that the market for such a monitor is to small and that it is the reason for why we dont see one but we simply dont know for sure. Its guess work on our part. It only takes one company and the rest will follow. Look at LG and their ultrawides, now we have Acer, Asus, BenQ, Dell, samsung, HP and a bunch of ebay brands doing them. But im not surprised if you are right about size. It has to be big(no pun!!!!! noo!). Why else would acer and BenQ release 35 inches of 2560x1080 va horror?

You seem to be suggesting a company would design, manufacture, market and distribute a monitor without any real forethought, planning or research as to whether it would actually sell lol! Trust me, any company does months and months, if not years, of work on that before a product even gets off the drawing board. Even blenders and toasters get this kind of treatment, there will be whole departments whose sole function is to determine these things, so you can bet PC monitors go through the same process. Of course, there is never a guarantee that any product will succeed, but no company would ever take a casual 'let's try it and see' approach. If a smaller monitor is ever released, it will be because consumer research has shown a good chance of it selling and being profitable, simple as that. LG will absolutely have done that with the ultrawides.

well i bought a acer x34a predator yesterday , i have to say at the moment im feeling a little underwhelemed. Maybe its because ive been gaming on a pionner krp500a for the past so many years.

Initial observations :-

Monitor pin sharp on desktop content , not in game always seems slighly blurred maybe its poor contrast / black level. I certainly couldent watch a movie on this thing it just looks poor to be honest.
With referance to above i dont think its a dud screen just how tech works as i looked at the asus before and it looked similar , slightly blurred in game not sharp poor colours.

Motions great hit 100hz nps no coil whine no dead pixels , however have annoying bleed bottom left of screen ... eyes feel drawn to it.

Quite shocked to be honest after reading about ips and how they offer better colours i just dont see it , debating wether to keep monitor and go back to kuro with dsr.

Seems quite funny to me in some respects that a 6 year old kuro plasma performs in most respects better ie colour reprdouction black levels detail in picture then a october manufactered 2016 lcd.

That doesn't really surprise me... this is a common complaint amongst plasma owners switching to even the best LCD TV's. Only OLED can compete. In terms of colours and blacks, plasma was the peak, the Betamax to LCD's VHS lol! It was a shame LCD won that battle... we've all lost out really, but then I doubt we'd ever have seen a plasma PC monitor. Still, many people miss the old CRT days. I do wonder where we'd be today if LCD's hadn't been invented or taken off.

I think you may find yourself disappointed with any and all PC monitors until OLED arrives on the scene, which may be quite a wait.

Update: After some unfavourable initial impressions with it, I'm now hooked on UW. Realised this while playing through ME2, started playing it on the TV again after playing on the monitor and I got so used to the extra side-vision I realised I don't like 16:9 so much anymore. Whoops! Compatibility problems and the 16:9 cinematics/movies are still a bitch tho. Oh well.

Told you so! ;)

Welcome to the master race :D

If I ever went back to a 16.9 display, I would instantly be creating a 21.9 custom resolution, 16.9 really does feel so squashed after having used 21.9 for so long now.

Seriously though, you would love one for the racing games.

You could even create a custom 21.9 resolution for your monitor under AMD driver display to somewhat test it out (2560x1080 with a 1:1 pixel mapping is what you would need on yours iirc), although it won't look quite as good since the screen itself doesn't have the same width as the dedicated 21.9 screens.

Keep trying to convince yourself ;)

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!! :p

No that is not what i am suggesting. I am well aware of the **** ton of spreadsheets that gets created to backup a possible product and why it should/should not exist. The thing is though that what people want or don't want is not always the reason for why a product is released or not. If people didnt want smaller screens with bigger resolutions that why do we have 24inch 4k monitors? Why do we have 25inch 1080p ultrawides? There is more to it than just the "not enough people want it so we wont make it" arguement. That is all im suggestion. LG took a gamble back when they launched their first lineup of ultrawides and it paid off so it makes me wonder why they dont go all the way. I mean they clearly are ready to release niche monitors, just look at the new kid on the block, the lg-38UC99 a 3840x1600 monster. With its specs, resolution and color depth, and a pricetag so expensive you would think its a professional monitor aimed at business's but then they throw in freesync support and a 75hz upper limit and it suddenly looks like they want the tech enthusiast that games on the side to buy this.

I'd rather have 3 separates mate, which as you know I'm doing. It's far more immersive as a wrap around rather than 1 long squished screen

@TonyTurbo78 out of curiosity have you tried one in person ? i always wanted one, since that LG came out years ago i forgot it's name it came out around the same time as the first rog swift. But after sitting in front of a 21:9 i went from wanting one to feeling like i needed one. Funnily going from 4:3 to 16:9 i did the exact same thing.

If you haven't i would definitely recommend trying to get on one for a few hours. Just to at least try and then say yes/nope this is/not for me.

yeah, had a look at a friends a while back, to me everything looked squished and out of proportion and I just didn't like the experience it gave me. Maybe it was a one off bad experience but until I see other I've nothing else to base it on. I just think they look silly being that wide on a desk 30 inches from your face.

Yeah i can understand that. It does sound like it was a bad experience in general. That is actually one of the only reasons i tell people to not get ultra wide is if i know they are the person who would get more frustration than pleasure from it. Especially when something is made with poor support for it can be really irritating ( RE7 is a prime example )

I have to admit, a 34" ultra wide actually feels small for me as i was using a 50" 16:9 on the wall not to long ago. So i can't really comment on that but it for me is nice to have the screen wrapping around. I actually took a photograph of my screen on my phone whilst i was taking one of those star citizen screenshots you saw. This photo was taken relatively from my eye location although not a perfect 1:1 location due to my bad camera skills.

Not trying to sway your opinion of course it's your own for good reason. I do however feel that given different circumstances of your experience with 21:9 you would not be so put off by it.

Yeah, I get your meaning. The 38" actually is a lot better in this regard, and probably the perfect size for Ultrawide :)
