£2k got me..

Matt - Why not just post a brief outline of the following...

What software you use?
What hardware?
How do you know what values to change on what impact this will have over the whole range of the engines operation?
How you monitor the results/improvements?
How you ensure it is 'safe' for the engine?

Mapping is not an easy thing to do well, even with fully functioning and incredibly flexible aftermarket ECUs.... Its an easy thing to get wrong if you don't know what you're doing, hell enough so called competent tuners manage it from time to time. Hence all the questions and scepticism...!

because its a complete blag.
a) its going to be ecu/car specific software wise
b) then explaining what has to be monitored. whats good and whats bad. why you log them, how long for, what conditions you should be logging them under, EXCEPTIONS to the rules. just learn about engines yourselves.
c) what parameters to change (and where in terms of rpm/load) and why you change them and what benefits to expect.
d) im not a teacher, i do far too much training day to day at work as it is, i dont want to start running classes on what results are plausible figures and what are not, what youre aiming for with the software im familiar with, when half the readers wont ever own that car and would never go ahead with those changes anyway.

in any case, it has all been discussed to death on the audi/vw boards anyway.... even that gets boring with page after page of knock sensor "noise", knock sensor voltage and what actually gets interpreted by the ecu before it decided to "correct" the ignition for you.

You have vagcom ? Do a timed run 30-70 and 30-130 those will give the best indication of performance. The timer section uses the ECU speed pickup which is pretty accurate should be with 1/4 of a second of GPS on those runs.

Do you use lemmiwinks to adjust your timing ?

thought of that already. there would be no point. the first post in reply would be "bet that was on a downhill runway" making that a pointless discussion.

i cant get lemmiwinks to work, i dont have a serial cable

How would one go about 'changing parameters'? I thought VCDS was purely a diagnostics / data logging tool, I didn't think it could map the ECU?

that program i posted earlier is a good start but youd have to do a fair bit of research before hand to get an idea of what youre working with.

vcds/vagcom is a purely diag/data tool, youre right, no use for altering maps as far as i know, but obv invaluable for when it comes to monitoring the engine

Matt surely you can see why people are being so sceptical? You've made bold performance claims without any edvidence to back it up and when questioned for a bit of detail on how you achieved such figures you either give extremely vague answers, use basic jargon/terms to make it seem like you know what you're talking about or flat out ignoring what you've been asked.

No calling BS just yet, but you're not doing yourself any favours :(.

I'm not asking for a complete detailed guide in mapping the VAG 1.8T engine nor any kind of 'tuning masterclass', I'm just asking what have you used with YOUR car...a simple guide along the lines of 'I use xxx cable, with this software, I read this guide to work out what values are changes, here's the forum link with a chart showing what hex values mean what for each value in the table' would suffice. People are only bugging you for details because you're so relucant to divulge anything....

Listen, it's very easy:

Gaijin what was used to tune your car?

Ecutek reflash followed by several "adjustments" using Ecuflash, using a LC-1 or similar for the wideband.

Jesus, it's like talking to a politician.

The reason he might not be sharing it with us is, because someone might buy a Golf and use the software he uses and make the car they have, perform better then his.

The student will soon become the master.

I'm understand this if he was a professional tuner and this was a part of his job and livelihood, but it's not.

I think you'll find more often than not people are happy to share home brew "maps". At least in car communities I've been around.

Just give us an outline Matt, for example when I installed the Emanage Ultimate on the supercharged 5 and started writing my own maps you couldn't shut me up about it, its an unusual skill to have and was quite happy with myself.

well thats really not the case at all, software like lemmiwinks has been about for absolutely years, youll find threads about that on vwvortex dating back years, and not only on the golf 1.8t it can be applied to lots of VAG cars from that era

in fact, its such in a "non-secret" that custom code have a version of the software available for download on their own site too

http://www.custom-code.co.uk/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=44&func=selectcat&cat=1

its definately not something ive done on any car other than my own, im not a professional and the only experience i have is with my own car, so id love to know where fox came to his opinion about me claiming to be a weltmeiser tuner pro. im just a bit of a geek that likes to fiddle with things

... much like most of us here who take it upon ourselves to run our CPUs at specs beyond what AMD or Intel thought was a good idea.

i cant run prime95 benchmark on my car though and there is no point asking me to datron or put it on an fia approved engine dyno, because i wont be. it consistently turned in 15.0s at the pod though

My story doesnt fit with what you told us, I know. But thats my point.

that your interpretation of what happens in my life is my valid than what ive actually told you about it?

Yea, because everyone always tells the truth on the internet. So what you said must be true! Just like you are now a top secret tuning god with a Golf that is so fast it makes a Civic Type R look like its going backwards.

Matt will not tell us which software he uses to map his car in case someone on here happens to be an expert and wishes to quiz him on it.

This is why, when one of the first responses was me asking him what software he uses, this question was ignored forever more.

I have a huge interest in mapping, have reads huge amounts of literature on the subject and plan to eventually (one day) build a DIY megasquirt for something cheap and put it into practice. So I'd have loved to have had a semi-informed discussion with you on the subject, but so far it just seems like a load of crap.

people lie to gain things. im really not interested in "internet kudos". in fact the same applies in the way that im not going to type out reams and reams about parameters this and logging that just because someone doesnt beleive it. i have a life, if anyone is despiratly seeking tinterweb recognition its you fox with your despirately sad way of keeping tabs on other poster's OCUK lives and then misquoting it at a later dated for "lolz" infront of your interweb buddies. ill get the slips from pod up though. i had a look on youtube earlier, it seems standard civics seem to run 15.4. i suppose 0.4s is a fair old distance at 90mph.
