£2k got me..

I think a remap for the 1.8t makes them drive a whole lot differently.

Mines due it's wishbone bushes soon, I've been very picky since I've had my cheapo mark 4 and changed loads of things "just because". Maybe I wish I could afford a new car so want as many new bits on it as possible so it'll last me, who knows :) Mines had a new clutch and flywheel, loads of bits changed. It's on 135k now and once I've done the gearbox oil, PAS fluid, brake fluid (booked in next monday for the brake fluid) absolutely everything I can think of has been done bar the wishbone bushes.

Still can't think of anything else I could have had which is as civilised, sensible, small, turbo'd, cheap to run...

Lots of Golf slating but if it's a 2k car why be so picky? It won't really lose any money which is a bonus.

clearly its against the trend ;)

im gonna be going through the whole "just becuase" list too, thats how ive treated my mk3 and thats on 225k miles.

another "just because" will be to get the sump down and clean the oil pump pick up. messy job but one that will really go toward future proofing the engine.

and youre right, this car does comfortable, sensible, civilised, reliable, cheap to run, it does it all day long

i was picky at £2k. ive never gone out to buy just any old rubbish, mine has loads of spec and is in better condition than some of the "low mileage minters" we saw

mk4 golf + knock of audi rims = de rigeur

ive had the car for about three weeks and kept it standard ish, unfortuntately ive been to a couple big vw shows and ive got the bug big time to carry on changing bits

ive had a brain wave. first i need to loose the skyscraper ride height. -40mm should keep it roughly civilised.

next step... im gonna hunt down some AC Schnitzer type 2s.

lets try something different for a change ;)

yup. i had a bit of a lightbulb moment, i have a feeling theyll work very well.

im having someone photochop them on for be before i take the plunge obviously, but i can see this being a winner

Fox, you couldnt have a peep on the BMW boards to see if there are any up for sale at the mo could you?

im not fussed about 17 or 18 inch

For the love of God, start a thread about a new car, then post no pics.
Then rant on about what you shall do to said car, and still no pics!

We want some pics :(

Although, in my understanding, Golfs have always been reliable, and decent to drive.
As long as you enjoy it and it serves your wants then its a good buy!

its an old golf, black and with three doors with skyhigh suspension.

now, about 2k miles later, its heavily splattered with bugs, the interior has a smattering of fag ash but i polished the inside of the windscreen because i had a lot of miles to do through the night last weekend.

when i get it lowered and get some pretty wheels on (must stop going to golf shows!) ill get some pictures up

I've been a couple of shows the last month or so myself and yes it really is damn annoying! I want to try leaving mine alone a bit now so I can plan ahead for my next car haha.

more tweaking.

ive obtained software to get into the ecu and make changes. so far ive only played with the timing. ive had to do a fair bit of data logging and timing to make sure the changes are safe but so far so good with an additional 1.5* advance. ]

car feels totally different. together with other intake alterations i went out for a run with a mk4 AUM (so ko3s, im only a ko3) his was stage to, front mount, turbo back exaust, mine is effectively just remapped, no other money spent, and matched it step for step until the top of 4th (ie 110-115kmh+)

impressed so far. next is create a map profile for economy, low boost etc. boost gauge needed first before i put the boost up or down

what does this car now return in terms of MPG?

really not good. i had not owned one before i bought this. the people i spoke to about them all quoted the MFA figures. well it turns out that MFA is very very optimistic.

mine is getting bad mpg. i blame it on the tiny turbot. if you apply any throttle above 2krpm the turbot spins up and the ecu begins fuelling as per the volume of air flowed

im getting a boost gauge so that i can start to alter the boost.

im creating a map for motorway use/economy where itll run reduced boost and more timing to keep it efficient

the normal map has been tweaked anyway, but its crying out for more boost, but i cant alter anything without a gauge

got bored the other night so got gtech out to put some times on the car

with funky tyres and an original clutch (152k miles) i gave it a fair bit of sympathy getting off the line and with gear changes, it managed 60 in 6.4s and a quarter in 14.5s.

definately time to shave off the quarter as the plot showed i changed out of 3rd at 5.5rpm (early) then selected 4th when a fox ran out so i backed off and didnt even accelerate in 4th, so effectively coasted across the line.

Sounds fun, what are you measuring for your times? One of these G meter thingys theres a big thread for? I need to get one.

I want to get a TIP and new recirc valve on mine and get it on the rollers to get a rough idea of what kinda power it has and a print out of where the torque is. Mine drops off quite noticably after 5.2ish k being a ko3 but it only really has a APR stage 1 95 ron map on it anyway.

mpg wise, in Stoke I pay around 115ppl and miles per monies, town driving, I get 120 miles to 20 quid... I think thats around 28-29mpg? Computer says 33-34 average.

I'm on the look out for 17" wheels for mine. I had a set of TT 6 spoke ronals but god they were heavy! I sold them for a big profit... but again I think the 16" tyres (205/55's) look a bit chunky profile wise so on the lookout for 17's again but they're loads lighter than the 6 spoke TT wheels I had so I dunno :( Definitely don't want 18's, 17's and 225/45's for whatever comfort I can get whilst improving the handling a little.
