I was just thinking - we had the 0-whatever thread and due to obvious reasons (actually being able to do it) there wasn't much discussion or many posts.

I was out today and realised that doing 30-70 is much more feasible and after looking at a few sites, there's quite a few 'statistics' for these speeds.

So.....anyone up for it? It's a bit more 'open' in the sense that you can do this legally and without fear.

I've got a gentle run I tried today, (on a flat, of course) with an accurate speedo, so I'll upload that in a bit.

Peace, out!

ill try to give it a go, but not really got any accurate way of measuring it. How accurate are the tomtoms for speed reading?

I've got an accurate figure at home recorded on a manual 530i Sport at the MIRA test centre.

I believe it's 6.3 seconds but I'll double check.

It also showed up speedo inaccuracy, as that was true speed 30-70. The car was showing on the speedo that they were doing approx 33-75...

edit: Thats gunning it after cruising at 30.

Yea, TomTom is fine, prefer video evidence but if you can't, no worries (GPS is generally accurate to within 0.01mph but you may find it doesn't refresh fast enough sometimes) - FYI this is how I've made sure my speedo actually correlates with road speed :)

And yea - 30mph rolling, then pedalling it :D

Cool Fox - manufacturer's is fine - nice to build up a database here maybe?

Oh goody, my car does 40mph in first, and 70 in 2nd ;)

Mine needs 3rd for 70 :(

Handy hint - the back of Autocar lists 30-70 times for quite a few cars and whats more they are accurate times which they actually got, using proper test gear. Sometimes they are a bit slower than they ought to be due to prevailing conditions on the day, ie, the wet (The 530i time was recorded in the wet) but wet roads generally dont make THAT much difference to something like 30-70 so I consider them highly accurate.

Lots of cars are featured. Take a look :)

The sake of accuracy can we please exclude speedo based tests? I can time 30-70 in my car using the speedo in something daft like 5 seconds due to speedo inaccuracy, it's NOT that quick at all and for me to quote such a time would be misleading.

I love my Passat - almost in 4th gear at 70mph. :D

I'm swapping gears more than when I had the DC5. Although in the DC5 gear changing was a bit more rewarding. :p

bobert - a video recording of either the speedo or TomTom is probably the best bet but to generate a few more entries we'll accept stopwatched times on a gentlemen's agreement of honesty :p

God i'm going to have to try now ! installing tomtom on ipaq atm!

This test is really going to favour people who can just boot it in 2nd all the way from 30 which i'm pretty sure i can, to about 75 before 3rd :D

What can be used to measure it accurately ?

I had a progrom for my PDA called GPSDash2 that could measure acceleration/speed over time. Should give a fairly accurate measurement. Not sure what the polling intervals were though.

I'm submitting my 5 second time then :p

Gibbo will be roaring up and down the Imex tunnel as we speak, trying for 2seconds... :D

Hi there

Just managed 80mph down the tunnel with plenty of time to brake. ;)

In all serious if anybody wants, I can transform the old thread I did into a 30-70mph thread. :)

(Joking by the way, there is a 5mph speed limit in the tunnel for safety reasons) :)
