Worth remembering that there are a lot (read: millions) of Chinese who were never registered as a result of the one child policy, and end up being non-people in their own country. That's a big, vulnerable group, who may well feel that they have little to lose.

Except they come from completely different backgrounds, so context is key.

They are unlikely to speak English, and where they come from the Police are likely distrusted, and seen as agents of the state. They don't have the context to know that UK Police forces are going to deal with them fairly. And likely won't have any papers/passport.

Wow, how naive are you?

The traffickers have such a hold over them, through violence, intimidation, financial bond-ship, as well as other means including threatening their family back home etc. They are in constant fear of their life and those around them. They are likely here illegally anyway and are afraid of the police.

The conditions these people are kept in are unbelievable - it's not a case of just walking out.

Chinese restaurants/takeaways, massage parlours, nail salons, massage parlours and apparently cockle picking in Morecambe bay.

Could well be either forced against their will or just duped - promised some other job as say a nanny or secretary etc.. then when they get to their destination that job doesn't exist and they now owe thousands to pay for their passage.

There are Chinese gangs who are seemingly perfectly find with basically enslaving other Chinese people and presumably plenty of corrupt officials happy to turn a blind eye or even support it. Unfortunately human life isn't very valuable over there.

Plenty of things to stop them doing that - not knowing the language, different ideas of what the authorities will actually do (especially if the authorities back in China were involved in the first place - they might not trust the police - then again UK police aren't exactly free from corruption either when it comes to organised crime), potential threats to their family back home, or maybe they stumped up some of the money to get the person there in the first place. Also just simple blackmail - Asia has a bit of an obsession about not losing face/not brining shame on your family etc.. so some young girl who has told her parents/friends she's off to be a nanny/secretary in the West and send money home won't actually want it being revealed that she's actually giving blow jobs to drunk Businessmen in the back of some seedy massage parlour in East London - that would bring shame on her family etc.. and the handlers have said they will reveal the dirty secret if she runs etc...
 
Well it kinda rules out that it was nothing but planned trafficking and I guess the owner of the firm/lorry is in deep *****.
 
As you can imagine this has been a hot topic in our household tonight. I have to say VincentHanna has been nailing it in this thread tonight and is completely on point with reasons why this happened. The Triads are extremely powerful and would normally hold family members so that others feel like can't escape. Run out the door, ok, we'll kill your daughter/sister/mother etc back home etc.

Another angle is often they have family or friends who want to come over or they want to join them who they believe (often wrongly) they are working towards paying the smugglers to bring them as well.

EDIT: Or as Rob said above family/friends are threatened if they run off.

Not necessarily, the driver has turned up at a port to pick up an unattended trailer that’s been sent over the water , probably completely legitimately, somewhere along the lines prior to him collecting said trailer a load of migrants shut themselves inside an airtight refrigerated trailer and either suffocate (most likely) or die from exposure.

Apparently he opened the trailer to retrieve his paperwork and discovered the bodies and subsequently called an ambulance who in turn called the police.

Thus far, on the face of it, no crime committed by the driver to my mind although usually paperwork is put in a small tube on the chassis of the trailer so you don’t have to break any seals to get inside the cargo area.....

Assuming he wasn’t in on it which would not really explain him stopping and opening his trailer on an industrial park well known for migrant issues amongst drivers such as myself, I’ve seen people escaping trailers on that very estate...

It very well may be pure bad luck on the drivers part that he picked up that particular trailer on the other hand, perhaps he expected the occupants to still be alive......
 
yes...said on the news the trailer was on hire to a company in Northern Ireland, that and the truck being registered in Belgium does seem a bit off but again it's not unusual for trucks to be registered in different countries to where the owners are from

looks like the police have their suspicions but no solid proof

Most trailers are leased / rented, as for the truck if it’s registered overseas it does not have to undergo the six weekly mandatory checks that U.K. registered trucks do,basically a dodge, neither will it receive any speeding or parking tickets due to being effectively foreign.
 
Media outlets keep getting that guy on from the joint council for the welfare of immigrants. He goes on about making it easier for asylum seekers and immigrants to legally enter Britain.

If he believes that, fair enough, but I don’t know if it’s got much to do with this case tbh. This is a much different situation to your normal asylum seekers.
