4080 & 4090 Coil Whine Thread

After reading this thread I decided against Asus and MSI and went for a less expensive KFA2 4080 SG. Have been running Minecraft and Witcher 3, both in 4K@120Hz with RT and Ultra settings. So far no noticeable coil whine, not even with open enclosure and my head right next to the card.

Corsair RM750x
AMD 5600X
MSI X470 Gaming plus

Is there any place you can even buy the KFA2 GeForce 4080/4090 cards? I search in the Unites States and even on ebay and none to be found.

Are they only available in Europe?

I tried 2 PNY, 3 Gigabytes and all have a bit too much of an audible buzz sound.

Even setting power limit does not help much at all unless I went to like 50% or below and even at 50% there was still a faint up and down pitch with game movements.

I tried a Zotac AMP Extreme and the fan motor was bad so sold all of them.

Now with a PNY and whine still too much.

Gigas too much

The Zotac I believe seemed to have too much but the fan motors were so bad it was hard to test it fully as I could not tame the fans as even putting them at 0% in MSI After Burner they defaulted to 30% which is bad motor annoying probably for safety measure to stop overheating.

No coil whine on the Zotac, fans are annoying ..... seems later produced cards are better regarding the fan.

How are the fans on it?? Are they quiet and not like Zotac where they have a terrible motor hum?

And what kind of PSU and motherboard and case?
Fans are decently quiet. The Inno3d X3 OC seems to be a quiet card all-round (or at least mine does). PSU's a Corsair RM1000X, case is a NZXT H710 and mobo is a MSI MEG Z590 ACE. The fans on my AIO cooler are louder than the card.

from googling around the internet it seems like every 4090 has coil whine and the people who claim they don't probably haven't listened to the card during a game.

Where and what case you have probably makes the most difference to whether you notice.

I honestly thought mine had none untilI bent down and put my ear to the card and then I can tell it's fairly audible.

But then the glass side panel faces away from me and the solid side panel of my P600S came with sound dampening foam/rubber whatever it is attached to it.

Even the FE cards have coil whine according to what I read, one forum had a poll about it and it was like 70% saying they had whine, the rest probably just weren't aware they do

Thats true, but it should sound relatively even quiet when putting ear close to it, just not barely or inaudible

All 4090s I have tried have a harsh buzz if ear too close to it and buzz is too modest and not faint enough if ear not by it and a few feet from case.

In contrast to the Giga Gaming OC 3090 Ti I had the coil whine was so faint and hush that with side panel on and noo noise and low speed fans you had to look for it to barely notuice and was not at all a sharp buzz but morer a slight ring in your ear only in certain ways your head was turned and barely at that to notice. Of course with panel off and ear right by it definitely something there more audible, but it was much to modestly quieter than 2 PNY, 3 Gigas 4090s I have tried where the coil whine is a harsher sharper annoying buzzing sound even if not near as bad as some Asus Tuf and MSI Suprim X reports. Its still more than it should be. Also can add one Zotac to the list of cards I tried, but Zotac also had horrible fan motor hum.

I have 3x 4090
1x MSI Supreme-X
2x Asus TUF OC

All have noticeable coil wine - similar to the 3090s I had

Not much to tell between them, one of the Asus cards seems a little quieter than the other two, but it's use case in living room PC is different than the other two - so the perceived difference may only be environmental.

Is the loudest thing in any of the PCs when running something at very high FPS.

In GPU-intensive applications, they're quiet.

What is a good app or game for me to test? I've just been running 3D mark benches and mine has zero audible whine in those

The Witcher 3's main menu always used to be a good test for me (albeit not tried since the recent update). Sitting there jumping between resolutions and framerate caps used to expose coil whine very quickly.

I recently received the 4090 FE and have no coil whine during normal use. I ran a benchmark where I hit over 600fps and I could hear a very quiet whine but I would say this is normal and in line with every GPU I have owned.

No coil whine whatsoever on my 4090 FE card, I guess I was lucky. I've also tried an MSI Suprim X air-cooled 4090 and that one did have some coil whine, so I sent it back. Shame, because otherwise it was a nice card, with a metal shroud and extremely quiet fans. Still, am happy with the FE design.

4x4090+1x4080

4090 Msi Suprim-coil whine, Asus strix -coil whine, Zotac -no coil whine and another 4090 turning up tommorrow but I wouldn't hold my breath as it another Asus.

4080 Asus strix-no coil whine

Blimey, RMA teams must be busy just processing your returns never mind everyone elses :D

Many will say things like "I'm in my 40's and can hear a pin drop, I have no coilwhine" but if you actually test them with a hearing test >
they'll not be able to hear past 14k hz etc.
I have just tested myself and this is true, I have the correct average hearing level for my age, what Hz level is coil whine operating at then?
