4080 & 4090 Coil Whine Thread

Roulette. I'm on my 6th lol.
I have had enough. I don;t have the time anymore to keep posting it back and forth. I have 2 MSI suprims X's 4090, 2 Strix 4090's white editions, 4080 strix white edition and a zotac amp extreme 4090. The worst offenders by far are the strixs it is not even close. Although the 4080 had the least coil whine.

Yeah tell me about it. Which one if any are you going to settle on?

This is my last, after this I'm out of the game for good. Taking early retirement.

7950X3D is going to be my last big tech purchase for a while. :)

That's because the 4090 and 7950X3D will be BiS for at least 18 months. Excluding potential 4090ti/titan £5000 edition, which I'm gonna skip at least :D

I might go pick up a gigabyte aero as they say the gigabytes and zotac has the least reports of coil whine but knowing my luck I get another card like wails like Kate Bush or I could wait for the 4090ti or actually considering the titan.

Also forgot I had a Zotac amp extreme 4080 as well...

Get a gigabyte 4090 water force, basically no audible coil whine

Depressing reading that folks are on 8+ cards and still no luck.

I really wish some of the tech youtubers took up this issue. If nothing else, id love to really understand why its such a 'luck of the draw' issue.
Why do some cards have it worse than others when they are the exact same model?? Why is it only with coil-whine on GPUs that we accept this?
Would people accept Motherboards coil-whine ? With the same reason of "ITs the high current these CPUs draw now" as a defense?

I use waterblocks on most of my gpu's, would you say installing waterblocks negates any coil whine? From experience, i think it does but only to a certain extent.
My 3090FE was better with the block on but still had audible whine in specific games. It even whined sometimes just rotating the viewport in blender.
I've got a Inno3d 4090 with a block and it has no whine that I can hear unless you overclock it, then it has faint whine. I don't overclock it.

I have tried like a bunch of different 4090s and all had too much buzzing type whine, but very few had squeal unless or weird beeps. Some were worse than others, but all had too much which is a shame to say.

3 PNY cards all had too much buzzing/rattling a little worse than 3 Gaming OCs, but not much.

An Aorus Master 4090 and had too much harsh buzz and squeal even at less than 150 FPS sometimes

2 of the 3 Gaming OCs were a little less bad than PNY, but barely and probably best samples and one of them whine was like gone if power limited to 50% though the clock was gimped to 1100-1400MHz which is a terrible perf reduction and a shame as it needed that much to get rid of it as downclocking or undervolting a bit even by 300 to 400MHz or eve power limit to 60% on this and all other cards did almost nothing to improve when and in fact on some of them it may have made the rattling/buzzing slightly worse.

Now on a Zotac AMP AIRO XTREME 4090 to test for coil whine. Fans are unbearably bad annoying hum, so taped them so they cannot spin while I test it for whine and if it is the best or acceptable, I will replace the fans with quieter ones if this card's coil whine/buzz is acceptable levels, otherwise I will return it if whine is unacceptable but of course cannot replace fans first in case I do have to return it. Of course doing this to avoid the bad fan noise, limit gaming sessions to 1 to 2 minutes at most and pay close attention to temps since fans are prevented from running. So far temps ok with fans off as long as I am quick and exit the game after 2 minutes or less (temps never exceeded 70C for GPU core nor 80C for hotspot and memory) and do not let them climb without fan. As for whine/rattling, a little bit more than I would like still which means they all are going to have some of it. but I think the best card with quietest whine/rattle so far out of all I tried. Have not gotten to power limit nor undervolting it yet. But likely to settle on this card and deal with some and maybe isolate case noise more and of course replace the fans. I am hoping power limit or 300-400MHz downclock or underovlting gets rid of any whine on this card unlike the others without a severe performance gimping like 50% power limit does.

Do AMD cards suffer from bad coil whine this gen?

I have never used an AMD card this gen, but from reports even a Reddit complaints sating AMD is not your friend or underdog as they sell a card for over $1K with coil whine and underwhelming performance improvement so I assume yes.

I heard prior gen their cards also had coil whine often worse than Ampere.

I’ve used 6 XTX, whilst they all had some coil whine it was less than the 4090s I’ve tried. I think the days of getting a high end GPU without coil whine no longer exist. Now it’s a case of how bad the inevitable whine will be.

That's enough for me then, if I'm going to accept some coil whine I probably won't be paying 4090 prices.

I really like the look of the Sapphire XTX nitro, just the Ray Tracing performance holding me back.

Coil whine is generally luck of the draw, some cards get it some don't, some cards the whine can be minimised or eliminated totally by running stress tests for a lot of hours, and on some cards this does nothing. Sometimes its the psu that's at fault and not even the card.

I had a red devil 6900xt and it had zero coil whine. Though this gen some MBA cards have it, along with some FE cards and one card in particular that's constantly brought up is the msi suprim x. If it's that noticeable the card should be replaced by the vendor, especially for cards costing the better part of a grand plus.

Well I have tried like 10 different 4090s and all had coil whine. And my PSU is a eVGA SuperNOVA 1600 T2 which is top tier so that cannot be a source of coil whine. I have tried 3 on it. Also had a Corsair HX1200 and tried 6 4090s cards and whine and Corsiar HX1200 is also a very good PSU though not as good as eVGA 1600 T2 SuperNOVA.

I mean you state its luck of draw. Have I just had bad luck or do almost all high end current gen cards have it and only rare unicorns do not?

I also have my PC connected to an APC SMT1500 Smart UPS which is plugged into dedicated 15 amp outlet so everything good for clean power delivery.

So which cards truly do not have whine under full load. Are you sure people saying they have no whine just mean card at idle or only doing light loads or play older games that do not tax it. Cause every 4090 I have had has had some form of whine buzz under 350 to 400 watt or higher load.

Its getting more and more common as we progress, as Matt said it's basically inevitable now though I've not personally had it in a few years with my 6900xt and 3080ti which seems more luck of the draw than anything, the main difference is to what level the whine is noticeable. Some cards its minimal others it's a lot more severe, you can just try to run stress tests for a day or so and see if it minimises or accept it, that seems to be the way of things now as cards without it seem thinner on the ground.
