*** 4K Player Thread ***

It's usually been the case that the scalers in TV's have not been as good as those found in players, depending on how cheap the player is but that's been the norm as far as I was aware, the UB900 you should definitely use its scaler as it's very good.

I suppose it depends on the range / price of the tv though?

While I appreciate the player is dedicated to one thing rather than the TV that has to cater for everything from analogue to streaming, and other sources - a £3k or £4k tv should have a better scaler than a £500 player

You think the player should do the upscaling rather than the screen?

(I honestly dont know which should be best, and maybe different combinations of products produce highly variable results) but in my personal experience, and admittedly talking about the switch to 1080p rather than 4k, I ve always thought it better to use the screens upscaling ability as its more likely to be better suited to the display itself and also potentially if not likely to be a better processing chip to do the actual upscaling?

Rather than use a relatively cheaper player to do the hard work and then let the tv just display what it receives.

Really interested to find out why the other way should be better.

Use whatever does the best job, really. There are screens with better scalers than amps, amps better then players, players better than both. I think about the only certain thing is that I would expect oppo to release a player with a reference level scaler. whether any other kit will reach that level of performance i don't know. In my own setup, my screen does no scaling because it's scaler is rubbish. I remember when i first got it up and running (panasonic th50pz80), i was disappointed in the SD performance coming from a sony 40w2000 lcd. The sony was pretty exception for an lcd especially for the times and the panasonic was soft in comparison. Fair enough its not exactly apples to apples - ones a 40" lcd and the other is a 50" plasma - but its enough for me to force my source kit to do the upscaling of SD in favour of the screen.

This is the generic problem with consoles as players, there is a lot more electronics in a console than in a player so therefore cooling has to be a lot better (although personally I never found the PS3 to be overly noisy and I got mine as soon as it was released in the UK along with Casino Royale on BR and a few others, Stealth ? maybe not sure about that one)

I've only ever owned two bluray players; an original 60gb 'phat' and a ps3 slim which replaced it :p I honestly never had a problem with noise from either of them playing films. Never noticed it.

These days however i don't get time to sit in the living room and watch films. So much so i haven't set the ps3 player up since moving here and that was last February :p Just as well, really, as i pulled the ps3 out the other day test it and nope.....dead as a dodo. I'll probably replace it with an xbox one s at some point heh

Not necessarily, I don't know exactly how it is nowadays with TVs getting more CPU power but players have always been the one with the power so that's how it's been setup in the industry, maybe a TV at the high end these days would be more capable than they used to be but I'd still rely on the player with it having more grunt and better chips to do the job. Even with a expensive TV the money goes elsewhere and they know it just needs a basic scaler so they leave that to the player. This is the way it's been, but as I said I'm not 100% on how they are in the high end these days.

Thanks for your input James

Its not just about cpu power, its about how the cpu actually does the scaling as well

Whether its a samsung budget 50" tv compared to a 65 or even larger premium tv , this is how ALL the companies differentiate their ranges. Its not just about the quality of the screen but the electronics behind it.

Dont get me wrong, of course they will have two or three scalers over multiple screen sizes and multiple ranges, just like how AV forums recently reviewed a few different Panasonic screens new for this year and specifically mention different scaling capabilities, different HDR qualities etc etc. Next year the same premium electronics will be in a cheaper range of tv's - its how they differentiate all their different sets

So the Panny should arrive on Monday.. any suggestions for UHD discs?.. I went through a list of which were mastered from 4K sources (or close to) and with Atmos sound tracks.. and I ended up with 19 titles and $450 from amazon US.. Ouch.

I think i'll just get a few titles from HMV in the next couple of days. Thinking Deadpool.. and what else? :)

Oblivion and The Martian would be good ones, as well as Deadpool - Still annoyed the Atmos soundtrack isn't on the regular Blu-ray for Deadpool.

avforums have started doing UHD reviews, and they usually indicate how good the source is and what sound formats etc, so might be helpful for you

I get my UHD from wowhd. Oblivion 4K Ultra HD should be good and get the Martian EXT version in UHD

As much as Oblivion is one of my favourite films for sound, it's not from a 4K source on the UHD version, however i'll probably buy it anyway just for the Atmos sound track.

The Martian is sort of 4K but the SFX aren't, but the extended release does have Atmos.. so.. probably :-)

Will check out wowhd..

edit: Deadpool, kingsman and revenant purchased from amazon.. wowhd wasn't much cop in comparison (i'm a prime member).
