*** 4K Player Thread ***

I watched the Matrix 4k yesterday and I thought the picture was stunning. Didnt think much of the audio though. Is it me or do the latest batch of 4k discs have problems with volume. Some discs, Thor Ragnarok for instance has problems with audio but I have to wack the volume upto 50 from a normal 40 with the Atmos soundtrack. Last Jedi was same, but watched the Batman 4k trilogy and that was fine. Stick a normal bluray on too and thats fine for me at 40. Or its just me.

Just started to watch T2 and its not as bad as I thought. Some scenes have that hint of DNR and I have noticed the odd fx scene is more evident its done on rear projection (ie truck chase) which I never noticed before. Also on the truck chase the windscreen issue I thought was meant to be fixed but I still saw one shot where the top left of the windscreen is bent in yet in the preceding and following shots its not bent. Also I noticed they didnt fix the buckled right wheel when the truck lands either.

I properly raged at the T2 4K disc, they've removed a lot of the scenes that the DVD and Blu-ray release put back in, scenes that make the flow of the film a lot better. Wasn't impressed with the picture either

Definitely know what you mean regarding volume though, The Matrix and TLJ I have to turn up a lot more than I would films on Sky/ATV and so on

Proper UHD Blurays have much higher bitrate audio, result of this is more dynamic range is kept. You can literally fit in more detail and a wider gap between quiet and loud. Furthermore DTS is mastered -5db from DD (iirc) to encourage you to turn it up a bit and enjoy the range .

Problem is a lot of people still use TVs or soundbars with super high quality audio sources and whinge they can’t hear what people are saying and that explosions are too loud. Guess what, explosions ARE loud. That’s the point!

Not ideal when you have kids though (ive noticed certain programs on sky are much quieter than the rest, and blurays are also a lot quieter especially compared to kids adverts).

Was disappointing they didn't use the longer versions. With regards to audio it is the current crop of discs. I went back to check mad max and the Martian and the audio is fine in that. Put last Jedi on and you can tell the difference. Have 5.1.2 atmos too

I've been avoiding 4k Blu-ray for some time now because I couldn't see a cheap way to get a 4k Blu-ray player. What kind of price should I look to be paying for a good but not excellent 4k Blu-ray player? I was thinking of saving up for the Xbox One X, but that seems like a waste of money as I hardly ever play games on consoles these days and I use an Amazon Fire TV Box for media functions so now I think I could get a dedicated 4 Blu-ray player instead.

Any ideas or options you guys might suggest? I'm looking for 4k and HDR and not much else. I don't have any fancy audio gear for things like Dolby Atmos.

How much are you willing to spend? The Xbox one S will give you 4k disc playing without the 4k gaming.

The Xbox One S is probably the best solution at the moment given the price. I might wait for a sale and see if I can get it on the cheap. Just seems like such a waste to get rid of my launch day Xbox One to upgrade to a 4k Blu-ray player.

Can pick up sub £200 4k players even now. Samsung K8500 can be got for around £140 I've even seen it for £189 plus 5 4k movies. Samsung UBD-M7500 also sub £200, Samsung UBD-M9000 £199, Panasonic UB320 £199, Panasonic UB400 £179, Panasonic UB300 £169. Plenty of alternatives that are debatably better than the Xbox On S if not bothered about gaming and also want proper sound output, eg ATMOS.

If you have no intention of playing console games or rarely do, I would be looking at a standalone player, Sony have the X700 and X800 for reasonable prices, might want to check reviews, not sure what they are like myself.

The Sony X700 looks good. The price is £199 from what I can tell so not too bad. It would be better than buying another games console I don't need I guess.

Thanks for the tip.
