580 GTX Price is up....

So I've lined up some cash in my credit card which is usually maxed.

Going by past launches, what time will these 580's go on sale ? Will it be a case of tune in at 2.30pm on Tuesday or will there be preorders ?

If the 6870 release is anything to go by, you'll be able to order at midnight on the 8th, which is technically the 9th, but you know what I mean.

Any time I see those kinda graphs I just lol...

Yeah - you have to take manufacturer's stats with a pinch of salt :p

Still, I'm interested to see what Fermi at 40nm can produce, without the huge time-pressures that were placed on its original incarnation (by ATIs excellent work on r800).

I would have thought it will be the same as with the 480. Order at the time the product is launched which last time was 23:00 and hopefully not have to wait weeks before the product is available. I’ll probably be joining you in the queue.

That is very constructive, well done

And so true as well, that man clearly has talent for spotting a bargain :D .... my 5970 is @ 975/1300 and I paid less for it than wot new 580GTX owners will pay for their new card !

When a single GPU beats my 5970 overclocked there will be 2 of them in my case as soon as I can get em ...

This brings back memories of when I allowed myself to get price gouged on the 7800GTX512 @ £568  @ launch!!!! about 5 years ago. I was also advised my someone who works for OCUK that they would not have them in stock for months then 2 weeks later they dropped the price £150 & had plenty of stock in as well

Just putting it out there for you to decide what happens on these high end launches but regardless of price they always sell out anyway..................

Moral of the story? *NEVER* buy at launch :D

Been stung myself in the past though, prob happened to most of us at some time. Glad I didn't buy a 470 at launch

I thought the Moral of the story was OCUK sales staff will say anything to make a sale so in general believe nothing. How many times has "we will be the only ones to have stock" been incorrect, "we have competitive pricing" lol, about once every 3 years there will be a great week. Having sale prices that are beaten elsewhere on multiple items doesn't make them good prices, far too many people fall for this simple 4 letter word on anything and think they are getting a bargain.

Several e-tailers now seem to list half their stock every week as sale items.

470gtx now, great value, 460gtx 768mb, great value, 5850, great value, almost all the other cards in the range are "meh". I have bought a few top end cards, but the value is so incredibly bad that its rarely worth it. I think the 9700 pro, had a 2900xt and a 8800gtx though that was WAY after launch pricing and got a silly deal on it. 4870x2/3870x2 offered better value than two individual cards, the 4870x2 being one of the best bargains ever from RRP selling stores, £330, when 2 4870 1gb's would set you back over £420 (and were yet to be available), absolute steal.

Assuming the 580gtx will be horrible value, the 570gtx(maybe around 480gtx speed/specs) will probably due to its speed/value end up dropping like the 470gtx, but the 580gtx will stay expensive and awful value. LIkewise I expect the 6970 to be the suckers buy, and poor value compared to a 6950.

I really don't understand why people come on to say my 5970 will be faster, or my 6970 will be faster etc... While it may be true, it's pointless and childish bragging about such things. Each card has it's pro's and cons. I don't know why people take sides unless it's to give them some sort of reassurance that there purchase was the right one. I know some people prefer nvidia as they percieve it to have better driver support, better multi gpu scaling, smoother playable framerates, and less microstutter then ATI Some people prefer ATI and claim it has those same advantages over Nvidia while being quieter in general and using less power. To be honest, who cares. Buy what you are happy with and be done with it. It's not like there are any recent or upcoming games out there that need a high end gpu seeing as consoles seem to have taken over the majority of the single player gaming market these days. About the only sensible argument I can see in buying one gpu over the other is value for money if such things concern you.

i have no idea why anyone's surprised at these prices? in my memory which goes back to around 2002, Top-Of-the-Line graphics cards are always around £500 at launch.

ATi have recently been defiling this notion with their cards being lower on the price-scale with proportionally lower performance, but the 5870's were almost £500 at launch if i remember rightly.
