5800x now vs 5900x pre-order

I'm sticking with my emergency 3600 until I can go 12 cores or better at a sane price. Up till now I've been on a 6600k, and either had VMs and things running, or a game. The 3600 struggles but a can do a few things and game, just.

The idea of 8 cores for the games, 3 for the servers and 1 the OS...??

I just can't wait. Watching supply closely.

You can get a used 3900x today for ~£300 - that sounds pretty reasonable if you favour core count.

You have a point.

I could just do that. On one hand, it's not as good as the 5900. On the other, it's... half (?) The effective price?

Can you think of a reason not to?

Might be even cheaper than that, it seems to be a range of 200-330 on a popular auction site. If I needed more cores over single threaded performance and couldn't find or afford a 5900, that's what I'd do.

Besides, it's not like the single thread performance is bad.

It's really tempting. About the only thing putting me off is explaining it to the wife.

That's a...brave point of view. She'll know I have it. I'll have stopped moaning about the processor!

We shall see. Still holding out hope for a 5900, because that's already agreed on.

You found an overclocking programme that also assists with organising the workloads per core strength.

just install it on a day shes not in and never talk of it again, unless she knows how to really use task manager or cpu-z she will never know :p
That's just it. Not talking about it would tell her. Talking about it would tell her. Worse, she uses the computer as well, and has had reason to complain about performance.

But to her it's a mild annoyance, not worth spending money to fix twice.

setup a profile that downclocks it on her profile :P and just keep acting like its slow lol
i give the old stuff which is normally top end, when i upgrade she will get the 3900x so my wife doesn't really even need to spend the money and its how i get to upgrade without much complaint.

My Mrs sees all my gear come in but she doesn't know the cost! If she ever asks I just say it works out around £25 a month for a couple of years...

If she knew that this year so far I've spent £1300 on a Red Devil 6900 XT, £550 on a B550 mobo and 5800X, £160 on a 360 AIO cooler, £200 on a new case and another £100 on a new mouse and riser cable, I might be in a little bit of trouble!

Edit: Oh and I forgot about the £150 for 4000 MHz RGB RAM sticks! My excuse for getting all the stuff was that my youngest son's gaming PC was stuttering in Fortnite as his CPU was only dual core and that they had stopped doing drivers updates for his GPU; I explained that it made more sense to buy new tech for my PC and hand it down to his. For the new PC I had a "faulty" power switch so it had to be replaced... :D

I.. I can't imagine deceiving the wife like that? Is this the only such deceit like that? Does she do the same to you on other things?
Well she has a NEXT account that she usually runs up to 3 or 4 grand every few years. I usually end up doing some kind of consolidation loan every few years to pay it off. As our money is generally pooled together, we kind of have an unspoken understanding / agreement now that we don't have to consult each other for everything we buy within reason. It just caused friction in the past. I still don't want her to know exactly the kind of sums of money I'm spending on my toys though!

Do you mind if I ask how you live like that? The thought of not knowing how much we had as a household... knowing that there's this account somewhere that is charging us 17% interest when we could be paying 3% or less...

It's enough to turn my stomach, imagining that?
Simple answer? Life's too short to worry about such things. Been there, done that, moved on. There is always a way to pay it off or find a solution and I and cross that bridge when I come to it. I'm at the point in life now where I've moved to a more 'live for the day' attitude.
