5800x now vs 5900x pre-order

I've also gone for the 5800X rather than continue waiting for the 5900X. It was the price reduction back down to £379.99 on OCUK at the weekend that made me go for it as I missed it the first time round - I see it's gone up again now. Looking forward to finally replacing my 8.5 year old 3770K!

5800x here as well, could not be bothered waiting even longer for the 5900x, no regrets going with this CPU running brilliantly so far

5800x

if you have to ask, the 5900x isn't for you anyway

I think 5900x in general is nearly pointless, anyone who needs those cores should be getting the 5950x instead unless they are seriously budget limited - for everyone else stock to the 5600x and 5800x

Interesting how the mass opinion seems to have changed... not so long ago the 5800x was the ostracised child of the litter.

Likely due to price drop from many places. It definitely seemed the worst bang for buck initially

Yeah, I'm assuming the same thing. I had chance last week to pick one up for £350, which was very tempting.

I was having the same dilemma wait for a 5900x or go 5800x now, i refused to pay a scalper for a 5900x so went for a 5800x here on Overclockers.
Its a beast for gaming paired with my 3090 and I couldn't be happier.
Boosts to 4.8Ghz and it has yet to reach over 60c in game with my Fractal Design S36 AIO.
Max temp in stress test was 78c, very happy as I heard some reports of 5800x running hotter than 5900 and 5950.

For anyone on the fence buy a 5800x its a fantastic CPU.

I paid £430 for mine and I'm happy with it.

Price is certainly a factor, but not clear cut for me. I can afford either, but I do like to get "value for money". £90 difference is relatively small, so stepping up was an easy choice... this discussion topic has been done to death already. However, 5800x at £350 is well positioned to offer the same value for money on the basis of £/core (compared to the 5900x at £510)... the 5800x does not look so attractive above £350.

I'll be holding off until then or below that price I think. My system will only be used for gaming now so that should last me plenty years.

It's kind of irrelevant if you can't buy a 5900x and I suspect when you can buy one, it won't be for £510. OCUK have it listed at £599 currently.

I'm still on back-order at £510 (not with OCUK). You are right that you can't buy a 5900x right now, but my current system still works... it's largely a matter of patience, or lack of patience!

Thought about getting 5800x instead of 5900x as have a X570 being delivered today. The benchmarks show 5800x pretty much equal to 5900x/5950x for games & most other stuff but just really difficult to ‘upgrade’ as currently have a 3900x. Just don’t want to spend £400 when I just need to be patient.
TBH, like most people don’t need to change/upgrade...just want to

I think the 5800x gets hot cause it's the high end power limit and it's pushed through that single chiplet. The 5900x and 5950x push that power through two chiplets - having 2 chiplets provides greater heat dissipation surface area. Generally 78c is quite warm if it's stock, my 5950x when stock runs at 50c gamin and 65c stress test

This also explains why the 5800x are clocking higher than the 5900x.

Yes it was described as 'pointless' and the 5900x was definitely the one to get from a price/performance perspective. However the general opinion has shifted somewhat and the price change has had a big impact. Also the fact that in gaming it's just as good really. Think I got all caught up in that too at the time - but after a two month wait ended up with the 5800x and am happy with it.
