5870 problem [POSSIBLY SOLVED]

Yes my old 5870 wouldnt display most times on boot up. :p

Did you update to the latest bios aswel? I've done all the basic steps and probs a lot of the complexed ones aswel. I've got mine to display now but like i said if i reboot i get no display and fan just hits max. If i turn off the computer and turn it back on without waiting for capacitors to discharge completely then i get no display and graphics card fan hits max again.

Seems odd! Im guessing mines psu relates but i could be wrong. Could be mobo D:

Hmm your's might have just been the detectability of the card as one of the bios updates fixed this. I'm still thinking its the psu purely because i switched to my cheaper psu and it worked fine as in if i switched off my computer and turned it back on straight away it would boot up just fine everytime.

Hi all

I did some final tests today on my rig using my other psu (the el cheapo 750w) and disconnected all of the fans and just powered up my rig with the 5870 in and the full 8 gigs of ram...

IT WORKS!! everytime without fail, i can even restart and still get a picture! It doesn't take as long to power up the card either i.e. i get display faster than with my corsair unit.

I did the same thing again with my corsair unit with the case fans unplugged and i got nothing. The pc won't display but it is booting up properly. If i turn it off and turn it back on again, still nothing. If i restart i get nothing no display still. I have to turn it off at the mains like before and wait 10 mins then turn it back on and wollah i get display.

Conclusion:

It's the psu without a doubt, although i have never seen this happen before and its probably that rare its unheard of.

Anyway im in 2 minds right now, should take my rig into the local IT shop and get it tested thoroughly or just get a new psu and go with it?

What would you recommend?

I know this sounds silly, but after this incident its kinda put me off corsair....

Although the same faulty psu is still powering my system right now apart from it won't work properly if i restart or turn off my rig then turn it back on again, im abit weary now and i dare not run any apps that would load the psu even more..

im not sure but back when i got my first corsair i asked on some forums what to get and a lot of people were saying antec and corsair :p

Hmmm may have to look into the antec true power ones. I don't mind spending a £100 plus on a psu aslong as its reliable and not cause me problems like this.

to be honest i would stay with corsair as it was just unlucky to get a faulty one :)
i know what its like to be put off by a problem tho

Can't fault the Coolermaster I've got. Ultra quiet, had it almost three years, it's never missed a beat.

Sounds good! I may have to get one, first i need to get this corsair psu RMA'd back to the shop for tests and maybe a refund. Should cover the cost of my new one i hope.

When your looking at PSU bear in mind Seasonic makes Corsairs PSU's, they should be the best on the market but if you put off which I can understand there's plenty of other decent makes you can try (Enermax, Antec).

Enermax, had one fail on me a month after it's guarantee (only a year when I bought it) ran out, wouldn't buy one ever again.

Im quite tempted to give corsair one more try... ive been looking at the modular 850W modular professional series.

Whats your thoughts on this?

Already told you mine!

Corsair have had compatibility problems with mobo's (google it), wouldn't be my choice.

That's the one mate, but if they're having problems then screw it. Goin with a different brand this time. Antec seems good, will match my case :). Going for a 800w or higher for future proof.
