5870 problem [POSSIBLY SOLVED]

Jus did some reading and there's a lot going om about the asus P6 boards abd the tx950 psu. Think its best I steer clear of corsair psus for the time being.

I can't fault my coolermaster psu either, its a 460 and has been powering my 5850 since release, before that it was powering a 3850 & 3870 for a few years. It was cheap and hasn't missed a beat :)

Edit: forgot to mention its pretty much inaudible.

what do you think to the cooler master silent pro 850 modular? I think im getting that one, its neat and tidy and if its anything like you guys say, it'll be a good buy.

Am also interested to know if this is sorted, the coolermaster 850 I imagine will be ample for what you need. :)

Its still in test right now, i just rung up the guy and hes been testing power supplies all morning on it. Anything below 650W that hes used has been playing up i.e. no display and failing to power the card but the rig still boots up.

Hes just tried a Kingwin Mach 1 800W and its come to life. Hes used powercool and a few other lower brands about 750W and they've been okay aswel.

Power hungry card much? Or is it another anomally thats draining power?

And yes i forgot to say, i decided to take it in for testing just to be on the safe side. The corsair psu may not be faulty, it just might not be cutting it for one reason or another.

Further update, its not the psu. He tried my psu and graphics card with another board and it was fine. Its the motherboard pci slot, it can't cope hence the power problems.

Recommend me a new micro atx gigabyte board?

Is your mobo RMA'able?

Same here tbh, the IT guy has offered me a compatible gigabyte board for £55.

My million dollar question is though.. how hard is it to install the new mobo software wise? I'm fine with hardware but software I'm not so good at. I know ill need to install a fresh windows but will I need to install bios or is it already pre-configured into the board so all ill need to is reinstall windows??

it will all be there for you ;) wouldnt hurt to go the the maker website and see if there are any chipset drivers tho or updates

everything will work fine from the moment you power on tho

Should I leave my graphics card in or install it after windows reinstall? Also is the AM3 socket lever Meant to be stiff when yoy get to about 80 degrees lift? Just my lever seems stiff and locked in place.

Thanks man, doing it myself will save me £45 for a rebuild. Any precautions I should take note before I do this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Built an am3 socket myself on saturday, all you need to do is align the little triangle with the one on the socket. Drop the chip in and then close the leaver. It is sometimes a little stiff but don't worry about that. Dont be afraid to manhandle the leaver holding the stock sink down a little they can be a pain but should go fairly easily so don't be to rough :)

Wack it all together minus any pci cards and away you go!

(this is assuming you are using a stock heat sink and fan)

Thanks Vince, i was getting worried that mine might be stuck..

So leave my 5870 card in the new slot or leave it out till after windows has finished reinstalling?

I'm using a 3rd party heatsink and fan, its much bigger but i think i can still use it for leverage if need be.

Thanks for the guide :)

No the cpu socket can sometimes be a little stiff when closing it down. Personally I always fire them up with just cpu, motherboard, ram, gfx card, dvd/cd and the hard disk I want to install windows to.

Set the machine to boot from cd in the bios and fire it up, it will ask to press any key then away you go. Once in windows I connect up all the other kit, if there is another drive which the old windows install was on, Vista & 7 tend to pick up the install and modify the boot.ini to show the other installs on boot. I just remove them using msconfig or by modifying the boot.ini, this should get rid of any problems with windows booting into the wrong drive (if you need to copy stuff across from an old drive that is).

With any cooler its best to install it outside of the case on a flat anti static surface, I always use the foam that the board sits on in its box. Once thats done I then use the cooler to drop the board into the case.

Job done :)

Edit: Te be fair though, after writing this I found your project thread and don't think you need much help with installing the hardware. So sorry if it came across a little patronising.

With your sink the tim might have stuck it a little but nothing that a small amount of force won't move.
